Running out of Ram in FSX

FSX is a 32 bit application and, as such, can only access a max of 4 GB of virtual address space (VAS). Depending on the add-ons you have installed it is possible to run into the limit, at which point the sim will crash. Photoscenery and complex add-ons like those from PMDG are big contributors to VAS usage. Corrupted scenery add-ons can also cause problems too.

To put it in a different way - you can have all the RAM in the world, FSX will still be limited to the 4 GB of VAS that Loki mentions.

 

This is a hard limit, and there is no way around that except to get hold of the source code and recompile the whole thing to a 64-bit application.

 

This actually has been done, and the end result is basically Prepar3D v. 4 and later.
