Recommend a HeadSet

Recommended Posts

My FS 2020 build is almost complete.

However one thing that I neglected to put on my shopping list was a headset so that I can use ATC (possibly VAT SIM, more specifically VAT EIR)

Looking for recommendation for a headset that meets the following requirements.

  • Comfortable to wear for 4 or 5 hours at a time

  • Decent Mic, that preferable doesnt pick up background noises in the house, but you still dont have to stick right up to your mouth either (no one likes the sound of heavy breathing)

  • Has a button to turn the mic on or off on the headset or wire.

  • Also has volume control on the headset or wire.

  • costs up to €140. Could push this a bit further but now on a very tight budget and saving hard for another monitor and Video card.

  • must be fairly easy to add TrackIR at a later date.

  • very good sound quality.
I like my music ( I mean really really like) and although I know at this price I will not get the sound quality that I get from a true HIFI quality headphone I would like something approaching that.

Obviously looking to get the best I can get for that money.

Wired or wireless I am open to a long as a wireless version has at least 8 hours between charging.

What do you recommended, that you personally have experience of?

Also forgot to say, I have never used a headset while playing a game or flying a SIM before.

Actually I have never had a headset before with a microphone. Just have a really nice set of headphones that I use with my PC and guitar amp.

If there is anything else I should be considering please shout out.

I like my logitech clearchat wireless. Info in my posts in these threads. Mostly last post in each thread I think.

Clearchat sound quality was superb (Still is actually, and had it for 7 years now.) and wireless connection very is good (stable). But connection does not go through walls well. Has volume and mute buttons. Muting turns on red indication light on mic boom, handy. Rotating the mic boom all the way up mutes mic also.

You mentioned 8hrs. Clearchat spec said 6 hrs I think, but mine managed a lot more then that when new. More like 11 or 12 hrs. I think mine 7 years later still manages about 5-6 hrs.

Clearchat is not sold sale anymore but I think logitech H600 is exactly the same.

I see the H600 has 6 hrs in the spec as well.

Even if it would not last long enough, there are ways around that. You can have charging cable plugged in while using. Whith cable plugged in you can use it as long as you want. (at least, I can do that with the clearchat.)

Besides, the clearchat has a nimh battery inside. Those take little time to charge and can be charged before they are really empty. You can simply plug it in each time you pause for coffee, so it can rechare while you recharge as well.

Haven’t tried them myself (been looking around myself for a headset), but the Corsair Virtuoso RGB headset gets good reviews. Battery is rated at up to 20 hours for wireless, and sound quality is rated pretty high. They can also be connected over USB or regular audio cable. Might be a little higher than your price though, at least for the SE model.

I see the virtuoso has a 2.4 ghz dongle as well. Good.

Good because with such a dongle you can use it (in fsx) to for example get ATC over the headset while engine sound comes through the speaker. Makes ATC feel realistic and engines are less annoying.

The dongle basicaly works as a second audio device/card that can be used at the same time as your sound card or onboard sound.

With wireless Bluetooth headsets you can not do this. With those you can't split the sounds over the two devices.

(In windows xp it was possible to get split sounds by installing 2 sound cards in the pc, but in Win7 that no longer works for some reason. (not sure about Win10 but I doubt they brought that back.)

I have looked at those. There have been some reviewers that have criticised the microphone which put me off slightly. Now as with all these reviewers is it that they are looking for something to criticise that most users would not notice, or do they have a genuine gripe. Its like the argument that some reviews make about graphics cards, ABC card only produce 89 FPS while XYZ card produces 98 FPS so the first GPU must be bad and the latter brilliant. The truth is I dont think there;s anyone on the planet that could tell the difference by simply looking at a screen without a FPS counter.

Also the the Corsair Virtuoso RGB headset is currently selling for €186.58 on Amazon.co.uk which really is more than I would like to spend.

I have already got my eyes on a Kingston HyperX Cloud Flight S 7.1 Channel Headset. Ticks all the boxes, wireless charging, rave reviews regarding sound quality and the microphone but at £149 it should be all those. That's a lot of pennies to drop on something that you only use to play games.

Having said that if I cant see something that ticks all the boxes and is cheaper that the one I would probably go with. I would sooner spend a little more and be certain, than be stuck with something for years that I regret buying.

I will definitely go looking for more reviews of the Corsair Virtuoso RGB headset though.

There's always the occasional sale or discounted price to be had.

Sorry, but I want something that I can listen to music on as well.

That basically eliminates any headset below £80

THank's for pointing that out. Something that I did not consider, but yes having the sim sound going through the speakers and the ATC through the headset was what I expected to happen. I never considered that would require a different soundcard or dongle.

So I actually do need to go with a dongle headset that doesn't use Bluetooth.

Well that narrows down the list considerably, but I'm glad I found that out now rather than after a regretted purchase.

This is exactly why I posted a thread here, most of the reviewers on the interwebs are only interested in the mainstream games and would not come across the particular needs or issues those that fly sims might have.

Thanks for posting.

Comfortable and very good sound, the only downside is that when occupying the entire ear, after several hours you break a sweat and it is not comfortable at all.
