P3Dv4 or X-plane

I'm confused, if all I want to do is fly around in the flight sim universe and add the occasional 3rd party scenery to augment that experience, which program is best, also are these "one time" purchases or are they subscriptions where you have to pay as you play, I currently have FSX:SE, would all of the sceneries and aircraft be compatible with either of these programs or have I spent a whole bunch of money over the years accumulating what's soon to be obsolete?

P3D has a very limited back-compatibility, but operationally is similar (not identical) to FSX. X-Plane has NO compatibility with FSX, and has totally different commands and a completely different look to it. For your stated operations, either one will do the job, and a very few of your add-ons might work with P3D.

Since you know what FSX is like, you have a limited idea what P3D is like (there are MANY enhancements over FSX), but you can download a free trial version of X-Plane to see what it's like. And you can get clues from the web sites for each program.

Both programs are one time purchases, at least so far.

So after whatever research you wish to do, you'll need to decide which you want to use (or get both, if you wish).

Looks like P3D has several options, given that "all I want to do is fly around in the flight sim universe and add the occasional 3rd party scenery to augment that experience", which would you suggest
