Thread: Scenery opening late

    Default Scenery opening late

    What I mean is, the scenery is kind of blurred but as I fly over it then it opens up, I have had this before and I think, though I may be wrong it is a setting in the FS9.cfg can anybody point me to it please?

    are you referring to "the blurries" or specific third-party scenery. Normally as you fly anything in the distance is blurry until you get closer. Unfortunate part of FS9 and it's the case regardless of computer strength or graphics card. But if you're referring to something more specific I'm not sure.

    Thanks Rich, no it's not exactly blurred but more kind of foggy/misty then as I get closer it clears to show more detail.
    It's not too bad I can live with it but I thought I saw something ages ag that addressed it, I may be wrong like I said.

    Reduce the visibility distance in the weather settings to 20 miles and then it won't worry you.

    My settings in the cfg file:

    [TERRAIN]
    TERRAIN_ERROR_FACTOR=100.000000
    TERRAIN_MIN_DEM_AREA=10.000000
    TERRAIN_MAX_DEM_AREA=200.000000
    TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL=19
    TERRAIN_TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP=8
    TERRAIN_AUTOGEN_DENSITY=5
    TERRAIN_USE_GRADIENT_MAP=1
    TERRAIN_EXTENDED_TEXTURES=1
    TERRAIN_DEFAULT_RADIUS=9.500
    TERRAIN_EXTENDED_RADIUS=4.500
    TERRAIN_EXTENDED_LEVELS=232

    Note that it's probably the last 4 lines that will help you.

    I tested the below entry quite extensively and found the best setting appears to be:

    TERRAIN_EXTENDED_RADIUS=6.000000

    Out of curiosity Tom, why are you running TERRAIN_MAX_DEM_AREA=200.000000?
    I have this at 100. To be honest, can't remember why I came to the 100 number for this entry. I set all my terrain settings so long ago and why I'm asking.

    TERRAIN_EXTENDED_LEVELS=232

    I did a lot of research and testing with this entry as there are many "You can only or you have to set this to this" opinions. Without going into a huge explanation, I firmly believe 232 is the best setting to use.

    Hi,

    I was given these settings from a forum post some time ago and they resulted in a nice sharp terrain display. I didn't bother finding out if there were better settings, or what each one was.

    This is what I'm seeing in external view, the scenery below the aircraft has activated but just a few miles ahead it hasn't till I fly closer to it.

    Oh...yeah...that. lol

    I made this discovery a while ago. Completely normal. Roger's suggestion earlier in the thread is the only workaround. I learned to live with it and have visibility settings set high. Many flight/combat sims I since found all work this way.

    One thing to try - if you use a terrain addon that has replaced the detail1.bmp file in the main FS2004/Scenery/World/texture folder, try backing up that file and replacing it with the default version on the FS2004 CD #4 (as I remember). If it doesn't help, reverse it.
