How to make a backup of Windows 10 System

Recommended Posts

I just purchased a Windows 10 system. When I receive it, I want to make an immediate copy (seeing how these days no backup / restore software is included). I assume Windows 10 has a similar setup as previous versions to do an Image backup (which I have used successfully in the past).

I have looked online and found many people who have not successfully performed an image restore. Has this been fixed by Microsoft over the years with Windows 10?

I got this from Cnet:

Because the tool to create a system image is somewhat buried in Windows 10, let's shine a light on where it's located and how to use it. Steps to create a backup system image:

1. Open the Control Panel (easiest way is to search for it or ask Cortana).

2. Click System and Security

3. Click Backup and Restore (Windows 7)

4. Click Create a system image in the left panel

5. You have options for where you want to save the backup image: external hard drive or DVDs. I suggest the external hard drive, even if your computer has a DVD-RW drive, so connect your external drive to your PC, select 'On a hard disk' and click 'Next'.

6. Click the 'Start backup' button.

After the system image is created, you'll be asked if you want to create a system repair disc. This puts your image on a CD or DVD, which you can use to access the system image you created if your PC won't boot. Don't worry if your laptop doesn't have a CD or DVD drive; you can skip this step and boot the system from the system image on your external hard drive.

Note: Even tho it say 'Windows 7' it WILL work for Windows 10 just the same. So 'Create System Image' in Windows 10 is 'hidden' in 'Control Panel'.

I tried to do system image (Win 7) and I got errors (missing files/services/etc). So I went and downloaded Macrum Reflect (free for Home Use - 100mb). Installed and ran. It took 8 hours to do image of 865 gb. But it solved my problem (stupid Windows!). It writes an *.xml file to 'My Documents' which I put on a USB for safe keeping. Now if my hard drive fails, or I want to get a bigger HDrive, I can use the Macrum Reflect to restore my BOOT drive © AND Windows instlal in a matter of hours. Hope this helps.

If this is any worthwhile contribution, I have never had much luck with recent editions of Windows when it comes to their System Restore. 2 years ago, I believe a Windows Update really did a number on my Windows 10 and I ended up taking the PC to an expert for help. I was not pleased with the outcome. As far as using System Restore, it will usually go through the motions and then after 20 minutes, the screen will announce "Could not restore to an earlier time..." So, I just added a spare Hard Drive to the machine and back up what I need. The PC came with a Windows 10 Disk. The problem I have had with using this down the road, as Windows usually disables them because of previous Updates. So you go up "S*** Creek without a paddle on this stuff in my experience." I gave up with both System Restore and the Disks. I have not been able to make a back up disk either and at this point--care less. I did go ahead and update System Restore from seeing this thread (PIC) but I doubt it will work if necessary (Per above).
