This traffic pattern does not make sense to me

I'm new at doing traffic patterns on KHAF (in Northern California)

If I make a left I go to the mountains. If I make a right I go towards the ocean with no obstacles. Why does this picture from AIRNAV say that I should go to the left where there are mountains? It doesn't make sense to me.

Looking at the airport layout doesn't provide much of a clue, but the statement on Airnav about noise sensitive areas NW thru NE gives a clue. But this page from San Mateo County about noise abatement procedures may give you a hint. For any further info you'd probably need to talk to someone from there.

Looking at Google Maps Pillar Point Air Force Station is not far from the threshold of runway 30. Might also be a factor.

Good point! Thank you.
