So THAT's what an OOM error looks like!

Never experienced one before so I couldn't understand what was going on. Kind of confused about how I ended up getting one. I was doing a X-country flight in the Carenado 172n and had just turned toward the Columbus, MS VOR working my way up to the Booneville/Baldwin MS airport. Maybe five other aircraft within range, experimenting with the Plan G program. I switched to the map view, then back to cockpit, and everything went black.

Help me understand the error better if possible. Does memory usage accumulate as the program runs until you've used it all or does it ever "reset" itself while you're flying? The scenery didn't seem too dense. Nothing in that area of Mississippi except farmland. I feel like I should be a little upset, but I'm not. After all, I'm running FSX-Se on a laptop with most all setting pretty high, if not maxed out and I've been getting smooth motion and frames around 40-60 even in high density areas.

Would it help if I end Plan G after I've figured out the flightplan and just flew it instead of leaving it running in the background and looking at it's map from time to time?

It should be freeing up memory as it goes but the general consensus is that available memory is lost over time. FSX starts with a chunk of available memory that it will use for various things. There is an upper limit on the size of that chunk that is small by today's standards. That shouldn't be a problem if you aren't too demanding with your expectations because a well-behaved program is conscientious at releasing memory when it's no longer needed. Apparently FSX is not always well-behaved, so it often holds onto memory it has allocated even when it no longer really needs it. This means that the memory available to FSX diminishes over time and eventually runs out.

There are some practical things you can do to mitigate this situation. Many people will tell you what they, although not all of them are worth listening to. I don't think closing Plan-G will make any difference, assuming you actually have a sensible amount of physical memory installed.

An out of memory condition is only going to happen with data being used by the Sim its self. Plan G wouldn't really fall into that category so I'm wondering if something else is going on. Just how much RAM do you have in your computer now because that could be a factor running the Sim and Plan G at the same time.

Also, if you do have an out of memory condition you'll usually see an error box, not get a black screen. It could be a memory leak within Plan G or something else. I don't know.

FSUIPC4 has a built in warning system if your available VAS memory falls below 250mb.

What it will do is give you a audible warning chime every 10 seconds.

I was flying out of LaGuardia Airport (VERY DENSE SCENERY WITH ORBX GLOBAL, Aircraft with 4096 textures and Ultimate Traffic Live) and was getting this...

"CHIME...CHIME...CHIME...CHIME..."

You can save your flight before the OOM happens. Exit FSX.

Then you can check the FSUIPC.log.

As CRJ says, an OOM usually throws a message at you that it is coming and will snatch your sim away.

What you're looking at is more likely what is called a CTD (Crash To Desktop), but a CTD usually just gives you your desktop back and says nothing about what is happening.

A necessary piece of information is how much RAM your computer has, and it would be nice to know what the Windows Error Report says.

I agree with Jorgen, the amount of RAM and its' clock speed is a huge variable here.

And sad to day, the more complex your aircraft and scenery get, the more problems you'll have. I find if I'm using heavy scenery I go with a simple aircraft and vice versa. That saves a lot of frustration!

Being an old chopper guy I usually fly low and slow.

There's a very useful freeware app called Smart RAM which is part of IOBit's Toolbox: https://download.cnet.com/IObit-Toolbox/3000-2094_4-75221761.html

This will monitor your RAM usage and free up RAM automatically, on the fly. It sits in the SysTray or the Taskbar and shows the amount of free RAM available in real time. Works like a charm for me.

I run FSX Acceleration on mostly medium settings, with Radar Contact and FSGRW weather, and Smart RAM keeps around 1000mb of RAM available for me. There's no FPS hit whatsoever.

Only 8gbs and 2.8Ghz speed, but she's always run pretty smoothly up until now. I keep turning off automatic updates though, and it keeps updating anyway. Did it the other night when I shut down and I wonder if that could be the culprit.

Not the best flightsim rig, but it gets the job done most days. I'll back off on some settings and try again.

Oh! I did get a box saying there was an OOM error, just had to dig through the blackscreen blank space to find it. never got a chime warning though.

I got the black screen again this morning with another program, so I'm guessing there's something else going on here. maybe a cascade of failures?

Pardon my French, but getting a "black screen" now also with a different application could suggest that you have a problem with your OS.

From your description of the automatic updates, I would suspect that you have Windows 10. The trick here is not to turn off the automatic updates, but to turn off the automatic reboot after the updates.

But you will need to run through the updates - ALL the updates - hopefully you have elected to get updates for other Microsoft products when you update Windows? Because that is also important....

The last time I had the crash to desktop I found out that I had a piece of malware that snuck onto my computer. This could be your issue too since you now have it with other programs. Download the free version of Malwarebytes and scan your system. If it finds anything let the program clean the malware. This might not be your issue but it won't hurt to try it. I don't have the CTD anymore.

I found an older post by you, Jorgen. It dealt with cleaning Windows registry and stuff. Downloaded the required freeware programs, and followed every step. Found LOTS of issues but seemed to get them fixed. I only made sure the sim was working afterwards before we went to the family Easter celebration, but the computer seemed to load faster and run smoother. Thank you for that, because I'm sure it'll help in the long run.

I'll keep on it and see what happens. Now I have to figure out why my aircraft preview window and the game in windowed mode aren't working right. I'm pretty sure that's an Nvidia driver issue as I've seen it before and fixed it. It was behaving that way before the oom and black screen problems though, and happened after an Nvidia driver update I think.
