Thread: New SSD, Re-install Win7-64 and FSX, Problems!

  1. Default New SSD, Re-install Win7-64 and FSX, Problems!

So I got a new 500GB SSD for my flight sim computer, and installed Windows 7-64 and FSX and most of my addons. The system was stable and went through several re-starts with no problems. Then, today, it did a big install of lots of Windows updates and asked for a restart when it was done installing. Upon re-start, it is refusing to boot. It attempts a repair, but just says "loading windows files" and has a white progress bar across the bottom of the screen that fills twice, then hangs and does nothing.

If I try to re-start and tell it specifically to boot from the new SSD drive, it says "MBR Error" and asks for a boot floppy. This install was done in UEFI mode and the disk was GPT formatted. Not sure why MBR should be a part of this, because it is not an MBR installation. I suspect Windows Update installed something that messed things up.

Any ideas what to do? I've just spent about 20 hours on all of this. I hate to have to ditch it all.

You could try a last known good configuration or a repair install. This is why in large part I don't even mess with updates. I can't tell you how many posts I've seen on computer forums where updates have hosed one's install.

I know. I've tried the system restore and startup repair. No joy. I also tried some command line fixes that said they were successful, but still no boot. Sigh.

You should probably have installed windows updates before installing any software, also before installing any updates do a search for any windows 7 updates to avoid, that's what I did after installing a new HDD & I had no problems.

Paul Craig hit it on the nose, and hard.

After installing ANY operating system, no matter which (any version of Windows, Linux, Unix and whatever), look for updates and install these FIRST! Then get them working..... before you do anything else.

Then get the libraries you need - C++, Basic and all else. Device drivers need to be updated also...

And then FINALLY, you can start installing applications....
