IF you only installed the base FSX with no updates then you were correct to use the disk and attempt to repair. If you installed SP1 or SP2 or Acceleration then you MUST remove them all before you can repair using the original disk. If you tried to repair an updated game then you will probably have to do a clean install...... Now about the Cache directory: did you install some scenery and not select the "use scenery directly" - that should be the only time that FSX needs to create a scenery cache; such a scenery entry in the scenery.cfg would show 'remote' instead of 'local'.
