Pine Tree Tops--the Season's Greetings

Sending the Season's greetings for a Happy New Year 2019 with a poem by Gary Snyder, an American poet:

PINE TREE TOPS

in the blue night

frost haze, the sky glows

with the moon

pine tree tops

bend snow-blue, fade

into sky, frost, starlight.

the creak of boots.

rabbit track, deer tracks,

what do we know.

Poem by Gary Snyder from his book TURTLE ISLAND (Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, 1975)

Let me add that the poem is a pure lyric, meaning that every word (except articles and prepositions) is something you can see, hear, and understand--in other words, they all have sound, meaning, and image content. The last line shows the mystification of man when he is confronted with the immensity of the universe.

Here is a second pure Lyric by Sappho from Lesbos, an ancient Greek lyric poetess:

The moon is full

and I sleep alone.

by Sappho the Lesbian

My Fav would have to be The Raven by Edgar Alan Poe. And I was tickled something awful upon seeing it depicted in an episode of The Simpsons.

I think I shall retreat to my dans la chambre. Where I shall rap on my keyboard.

How's my French?
