No brakes - Northrop Alpha by Chris Herring

jsaviator

Recommended Posts

Downloaded Chris Herring's Northrop Alpha for FS2004 from Simviation... not a bad-looking aircraft in its form (the performance is unrealistic and needs tweaking, and it needs a prototypical repaint-- but I digress...)

It doesn't have any brakes.

I am absolutely 100% certain that it is *not* my FS2004 keyboard assignments, or my joystick, or my fs9.cfg file, or a corrupted download-- tried all the standard suggestions and no luck. I am also sure that it's *something* about this aircraft in particular because I can substitute *any* other aircraft in the same flight and they will stop when the brakes are applied, but not the Alpha. Just for another take on it, I copied just the contact points into another aircraft.cfg and used the .air file from a plane that I *know* has brakes, ans *still* nothing.

Obviously, this just leaves the .mdl file. Am I just SOL, or is there something I can do to get brakes on this aircraft? The e-mail for Chris in his readme apparently doesn't exist anymore, so going to the source appears to be out. Any ideas or suggestions are welcome...

(*If* I get it fixed, I am going to tweak the aircraft.cfg and .air files, and repaint it...)

It actually points to the the aircraft config file or the .air file. ;)

I convert a lot of FS9 aircraft back to FS2002 and in many cases they don't have a variable in the .air file for brakes (look in the 300's, I think its supposed to be variable # 324 to #332). You'll also need to look in variable #1101 for brake force.

The only aircraft I couldn't fix the brakes for was the Virtavia F-4 Phantom, so its possible it could be in the MDL. :confused:

Just tried it and I confirm....No Brakes! I increased the brake pressure and even tried a different .air file from another tail dragger and still no stopping. Throw out an anchor!:eek:

Still thinking about a new flightsim only computer!  ✈️

Yep, those are the symptoms! I switched out everything (aircraft.cfg *and* .air file) except the contact points with another A/C, and nada... Can a .mdl file (what else is left??) cause such a thing? I am under the impression that all a .mdl file does is give the aircraft shape, but nothing of function (other than animations)-- hmmmmm...

OK, being the weird experimenter that I am I installed the FSX Northrop Gamma to see if that turkey had brakes. Sure enough, it would faceplant if I let it. I then added the Alpha [fltsim.0] and [General] info into the Gamma aircraft.cfg and used this new aircraft.cfg in the Alpha. It now has brakes.

Try it and see if it helps! You may have to make adjustments in other areas, but this should help.

The trick is that the aircraft.cfg needs a [hydraulic_system] and a [brakes] section. No hydraulics, no brakes, whatever else might be there.

The hyds don't need be too high, like 500 lbs pressure max, but it has to have something.

Hope this is some help...

Pat☺

Had a thought...then there was the smell of something burning, and sparks, and then a big fire, and then the lights went out! I guess I better not do that again!

It had both sections, Pat;)

OK, this is the best I could do with it, based on what I know and what I could test. I am not an expert in fine-tuning aircraft, so if it's glaringly-badly done, remember that I am just an amateur with some degree of understanding of the subject. The brakes now work without flipping her on her back, *provided* that on the landing roll the pilot waits until at least the tailwheel is almost on the ground. I never could get the parking brake to work-- still open to suggestions on that one. I also tinkered with the flight dynamics, weight and balance, eyepoint, fuel and other miscellaneous items to get her at least close to her prototypical performance. *At sea level*(well, at about the 20 feet ASL I was flying, anyway LOL) with zero wind, the Alpha will do 170 mph/154 kts @ 29" MAP @ 3000 rpm, and cruise at 145 mph/126 kts @ 23" MAP @ 2300 rpm. I haven't had the chance to do fuel consumption tests to see if it she really *will* fly 1650 miles on 116 gallons (not holding my breath on that one-- I was only able to find one citation on the fuel capacity of the original, which seems somewhat low to me, so don't bet the farm on it)... but it's on my list to straighten that out as well.

My revised aircraft.cfg, for anyone else who wants to try it out and make adjustments as they desire:

That's a huge clue. :D

Sometimes we miss something obvious because its too obvious.

Check your gear and scrape/ [contact points] section one more time.

Of the three wheels, which one has a brake?

If its only the tailwheel this starts to make a LOT more sense. ;)

[contact points] tends to be one of the early sections of the aircraft.cfg that gets any attention.

Once the model looks like its sitting "right", [contact points] gets ignored so other variables can be fine tuned.

So, check those three lines and make sure the two mains have a braking value and the tail wheel (center line) doesn't.

:D

OK, I'm doing this post not just for you but for anyone else who has landing gear problems. :)

The [contact points] section of the aircraft.cfg file can cause a lot of headaches when its really fairly simple.

Let's take a look at a typical [contacts points] entry for a tail dragger, in this case its an old Alphasim B-17:

[contact_points]

I know, it looks like a bunch of mush. :confused: It would be handy if we knew what we were looking at.

This list should help:

// 1 Class

// 2 Longitudinal Position (feet)

// 3 Lateral Position (feet)

// 4 Vertical Position (feet)

// 5 Impact Damage Threshold (Feet Per Minute)

// 6 Brake Map (0=None, 1=Left, 2=Right)

// 7 Wheel Radius (feet)

// 8 Steer Angle (degrees)

// 9 Static Compression (feet) (0 if rigid)

//10 Max/Static Compression Ratio

//11 Damping Ratio (0=Undamped, 1=Critically Damped)

//12 Extension Time (seconds)

//13 Retraction Time (seconds)

//14 Sound Type

//15 Airspeed limit for retraction (KIAS)

//16 Airspeed that gear gets damage at (KIAS)

BTW, you can high light this list and add it directly to an aircraft.cfg, near the [contact points] section would help. :cool:

So, lets go back to the mush and try to clean it up a bit. Numbers which are supposed to be only an interger have been fixed and I've spaced out the sections, note that I've also separated the GEAR and the SCRAPE points:

[contact_points]

static_pitch=5.493164

static_cg_height=8.619245

Let's go back to that list of definitions again. We're working on the brakes.

// 1 Class

// 2 Longitudinal Position (feet)

// 3 Lateral Position (feet)

// 4 Vertical Position (feet)

// 5 Impact Damage Threshold (Feet Per Minute)

// 6 Brake Map (0=None, 1=Left, 2=Right)

// 7 Wheel Radius (feet)

// 8 Steer Angle (degrees)

// 9 Static Compression (feet) (0 if rigid)

//10 Max/Static Compression Ratio

//11 Damping Ratio (0=Undamped, 1=Critically Damped)

//12 Extension Time (seconds)

//13 Retraction Time (seconds)

//14 Sound Type

//15 Airspeed limit for retraction (KIAS)

//16 Airspeed that gear gets damage at (KIAS)

Finding the brake variables is lot easier now.

[contact_points]

point.0= 1, -32.500000, 0.0, -5.333333, 1574.80315 , 0 , 0.961102, 53.4 , 0.400245 , 2.500000 , 0.951140 , 5.000000 , 5.000000 , 0 , 0.000000 ,

point.1= 1, 3.166667, -10.5, -9.333333, 1574.80315 , 1 , 0.961102, 0.0 , 1.076822 , 2.500000 , 0.322856 , 5.000000 , 5.000000 , 2 , 0.000000 , 0.000000

point.2= 1, 3.166667, 10.5, -9.333333, 1574.80315 , 2 , 0.961102, 0.0 , 1.076822 , 2.500000 , 0.322856 , 5.000000 , 5.000000 , 3 , 0.000000 , 0.000000

So, make sure those brake numbers are right. You're not out of the woods yet, but the idea that ONLY the tail wheel has a brake makes a lot of sense.

Bob, I see what you are saying... but the only difference I see in your example and mine is that the order of the first three items in my contact points was that I had the tailwheel first, then the left main, then the right main. I guess it makes sense that the order should be L,R, tail. I switched the order around, for both wheels and scrape points, to be L, R, tail. Other than the order, the numbers are still the same as my aircraft .cfg. above as regards brakes (1-L, 2-R, 0-tail). No difference whatsoever in braking resulted. Regarding the stopping of the aircraft, as nothing is bouncing or suffering an impact in taxiing, it seems to me that the only other factors that come into play are the toe brakes and differential braking scales. Having run this aircraft down Rwy 21 at KGTF at various speeds maybe 200 times in the last few days, I am sure that any number other than 0.38 for both just doesn't work. I revised it up and down by .001 until it worked without a leap up by the tail at taxiing speeds and to get stopped on the runway when all three points were in contact. The only other thing that I can see that will allow me to have more braking power *while in motion* is a CG farther aft... and it has crossed my mind that the load distribution may not be (probably isn't) quite right, so that's something for me to play with as well. Even so, what of the parking brake? I'm stumped on that one.

Well, like I mentioned, you're not out of the woods yet. ;)

The gear and scrape basically tells FS which wheels have brakes. You'll still need to find what controls those brakes.

Its still possible the fault is in the MDL file. FS tends to be very accepting of how much stuff gets crammed into the MDL file before it says "No more. One more polygon and this MDL won't get displayed at all". Before that happens, however, FS can do some weird stuff. That "extra room" the designer is using may be reserved for things like brakes or animations. :confused:

Without getting too "Matrix" about it, it can help to understand what FS really is. You're looking at a glorified spread sheet. Actually, several spread sheets running in unison. :eek: Try not to focus on this, it just ruins the game, but be aware of it.

Everything you see, hear, or watch moving around, has to occupy some reserved cells in the spreadsheet.

Except, FS can be pretty lazy when it comes to making sure those reserved cells stay pure. When a designer tries to exploit this laziness, strange things can happen. :eek: Like I said, don't focus on this part, it isn't solving your problem. Just be aware of how things are supposed to work. :cool:

Let's assume for a little while longer that the MDL isn't the problem. Try playing around with the [contact points] in the first three lines again. This time, concentrate on that fourth set of numbers, "Vertical Position (feet)", and try making some changes. It might look like the wheels are in contact with the ground, but they may not be. Change those three numbers to something more negative and see what happens.

Its also possible the center of gravity (COG) is wrong but I don't recommend playing with it. COG effects everything and while you may get the brakes back, the plane will no longer want to fly.

So, keep at it. There are other posters in this thread who gave you some good ideas to try. Just stay aware that's its also OK to walk away. Think of it like you see an ad for a used car you always wanted to own and drive. You go to check it out and it looks great except for the burn marks on the hood and a bunch of fluids leaking on the ground. Sometimes, its better to walk away. :)

Then again, when I usually find the fix to a frustrating problem I always wind up smacking myself on the forehead because once I found it, it was soooooo freaking obvious.

A long time ago, I found some freeware panels from Alphasim I wanted to use. I install them and NOTHING shows up. I figure it must be a glitch in the BMPs and throw everything I know at making them work. No joy. So, I leave it alone for a couple of days and come back . Just to cover all the bases I look at the CFG file again. It looks fine and.... Wait. The word COLOR is spelled COLOUR. No way, right? It can't be that simple. BUT IT WORKED. :cool:

I have been tweaking the Alpha cfg file and now have an airplane that flies, lands and brakes without tipping onto its nose. Changes to cfg are in the first three lines of the contact points, and first lines of fuel and brakes The chages to the fule section move the tank back and a bit lower which alters the CofG preventing noseovers during braking

Dear Sir !

IF you are interested to have this plane working as it should be please feel free to contact me.

It took me 10 minutes to fix it .

3 lines in the CFG to make it stop as it should do. (more incorrect figures in the CFG I corrected too)

I give you my email, i do not care to make it public.

IF you want the CFG file as a ZIP please contact me by my email.

I will further investigate the TOTAL performance up to specification for this plane BUT right now I am moving to my new house.

maybe by Sunday I will start to correct the whole plane. (CFG + AIR files)

My name is Guenter, email

Bob, I know what you mean about the forehead-smacking thing... been there and done that! LOL... every time I manage to get something fixed more or less right, I usually have one of those moments...

Guenter, I really appreciate you working on the aircraft.cfg... as I mentioned to Bob, it's not uncommon to have one of those "why didn't I think of that?" moments, and this would be one-- of course the fuel represents a lot of weight, and it stands to reason that it would cause some of these problems. Now, if you figure out why the parking brake doesn't work, that would be great as well.

I´ll e-mail you shortly...

Again, many thanks!

Scott

Whenever I hear someone in a vid or read a forum post about how great it would be if we could only get out of the aircraft and walk around, maybe open some of the hatches to look around... I have to smile.

Every time we have to dive into the folders to fix something, what the *bleep* do you think we're doing?

Well this is another case of tail dragger 'inbalance' (FDE wise). Plus other 'things' wrong. Like no '1' and '2' (thus no brakes) in cnt pts for main gear, plus 'tailwheel lock=1'... (REALLY?!). So it's NOT the model or how many poly's it has (hehe). Then no 'Model=' or 'Panel=' or 'Sound=' lines in (fltsim.0) section. After tweaks it now handles, flys, and lands good and you can apply full braking (no tip over). I made a short (2 min) video. Link:

Chuck, remember that "Uploading Freeware Means Never Having To Say You're Sorry". :cool:

We don't know what the designer was shooting for. Maybe they read somewhere that Alpha's (or, AN Alpha) have/had crappy brakes? :confused:

I also understand (kinda) why the brakes were set up like they were. Yep, its a tail dragger and FS has issues with them. If the plane was supposed to be nose-heavy anyway, hitting the brakes once the tail wheel lifts is going to result in a face plant. So, put the only brake on the tail wheel. I might not agree with that but I understand why they did it. ;)

I have the FS9 F-4 Phantom from Alphasim/Virtavia installed in FS2002. It looks great but flies a little heavy (still). This is the largest MDL I can get FS02 to load. I've been flogging on those files off and on for a couple of years and I still can't get the brakes to work. :confused:

I've tried alternate .air files, aircraft.cfg tweeks, checked all the gauges, and it still won't stop. I managed to to turn on the brakes and the parking brake, I get the text prompt that they work, it stops just fine on arrestor cables, but no joy on the tarmac.

Its GOTTA be in the MDL. There's nothing else left.

Ask Tom Gibson, I've been at this FS stuff for a while. Its the one plane that's beaten me.

Which is OK, I like to look at it in the game but I don't like to fly it as much as the Alphasim B-52 (now, THAT's a story and a half- it only took me a couple of years to figure that plane out after I converted it).

Hi Bob,

I've downloaded the plane and made the changes suggested in post #13 above, except for the fuel. I assumed that the displayed lines were only ones with changes, and thus kept any unchanged lines (like parking_brake=1, etc.).

I find that with the toe brake scalar at 0.4 it's much too easy to tip onto its nose, and have changed to 0.3 to avoid that. BUT - keep in mind that the brakes on these old planes were very poor, and I highly doubt that this plane ever had brakes as effective as they are at 0.3 - I would guess that 0.1 or 0.2 would be much closer to the truth. After I make those changes the brakes work fine. The parking brake also works OK, but is not capable of restraining the plane if you rev the throttle, something the real one also probably had. Don't expect too much from these old planes!

Hope this helps,

Tom Gibson

I made one MAJOR change to aircraft cfg but still used the original air file and it fixed the tip over. No need to move fuel tanks, either. No need to fiddle with brakes either- in fact I made it '=1.000'. So making the brakes '=0.001' is NOT the answer/fix (sorry Tom). I made a short video to demonstrate: Link:

. Below are the (only) changes I made. Hope you like.

The mods I provided will allow you to brake (even if brake=1.0) with no tip over.

Contact Points 'un-realistic'? What 'part' of the cnt pts are 'un-realistic' I would like to know. Is there some 'aspect' (real or imagined) about cnt pts that I did not know existed? I got nothing on Google for 'Un-Realistic cnt pts'. Maybe some of this 'modern stuff' is 'not right' as the Alpha WAS from 1931 and not 2004 (Cheesh!). Moving fuel tank was 'un-realistic' and no one pointed that out!! Humm... . I better shut up before I blow it. Dejavu all over again.

If you would have read my post carefully, I said I did not move the fuel tank, for that very reason. The unrealistic part of moving contact points is that they are no longer at the landing gear locations, and if moved too far will result in an unrealistic dipping or rising of the main gear as the plane's tail rises off the tail wheel when taking off.

Hope this helps,

Tom Gibson
