Default DC3 Airways announces Berlin Airlift series 2018!

DC3 Airways Multiplayer Division announces it's 2018 re-enactment and commemoration of the Berlin Airlift, which began back in June 1948.

There are commemorative events being held this June in Berlin I understand, and DCA will also do it's own tribute flights commencing Saturday 9th June for 5 weeks, each session commencing at 18:00z.

The dates for this mini series are for the 5 Saturdays 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th June and 7th July.

More details will be appended to this post as details are finalised. For the moment please familiarise yourselves with the attached charts etc. to get an idea of what the airlift was about. I have also included some links to get a historical perspective on the events of 1948/49 and to get an appreciation of what we will be trying to replicate.

Essentially there were a number of airfields in western Germany that the British, French and Americans used to transport supplies to the beleaguered people of West Berlin, in effect providing a lifeline to 2 million Berliners.

The airlift involved implementing corridors, waypoints and altitude and speed restrictions to maximise the tonnage into the city and maximise the flights both in and out of the 3 German airports.

Pilots will need to be able to navigate via NDB's, control airspeed in climb and descent and to adhere to departure and approach procedures to ensure separation and safe passage in what will undoubtedly be busy airspace. It will challenge us in different ways and make us better appreciate the skills and efforts of the men of 1948/49 who ensured the freedom of West Berlin and ultimately ensured the unification of Germany in 1989.

Files will be provided to implement the numerous NDB's used and textual descriptions of the routes we will undertake. Flight plan files for software such as Plan-G, FS Commander and LittleNavmap will NOT be provided nor should they be created. By all means use your flight planning software as an electronic paper chart but by not connecting your sim software to it you are ensuring a greater immersion and realism to fly like they did in reality, using cockpit instruments, speed and altitude etc. rather than any autopilot or 'follow this route' options.

These 5 sessions will be opened up to other organisations to participate, such as Bluegrass, Flightsim.com and such so that we can have a maximum participation to fill the skies and perhaps non DCA pilots will fly some of the other non Douglas aircraft types to provide a wider respresentation of the event with aircraft such as the Sunderland flying boat, HP Hastings, Avro Tudor etc..

Further details will be posted in a week or so, so check back for more information as regards routs, weather etc..

    Cool

    Brilliant mate, thanks!!

Folks, the events produced and run by DCA have been of the best on the internet.

This will prove to be well worth the time and effort for set up.

Being prepared ahead of time is essential.

Always a very supportive and friendly crowd.

    Cheers Glen,

If anyone from Flightsim.com or elsewhere is interested in participating in this event would they please post their interest here and state what flight simulation software they use.

Our multiplayer events take place on FSINN but you can also connect using FSD Proxy and Vpilot once supplied with the connection details.

We are currently reviewing the best means to facilitate non DCA members taking part.

Oh man! Do I wish I could join in this year.
I participated in the 2015 or 2016 Operation Market Garden event (I can't remember exact which/when), and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It was a real joy to work with the DCA folks, getting the right plane set up, the scenerys loaded, and the FSINN comms set up and running.

Sadly, some medical problems preclude my participation this year. My ISP seems to to be randomly in and out as well.

I still wish I could join DCA in this amazing event. It actually felt like I was THERE. Never had a more enjoyable experience.

If you want a realistic, pleasant, totally amazing MP experience, the DCA events are IT!!!

Had a thought...then there was the smell of something burning, and sparks, and then a big fire, and then the lights went out! I guess I better not do that again!

June 2018 sees the 70th anniversary of the commencement of the Berlin airlift. Back then in 1948 tensions were high between the western allies and the Soviet bloc as the Communists sought to use any means short of war to eject the allied garrisons from Berlin.

By introducing rail, road and water blockades the Soviets hoped to force the small allied garrisons to withdraw from Berlin which would very much have strengthened their hold on central Europe. The allies determined that this must not happen and instigated the airlift whereby 100's of American, British commonwealth and civilian aircraft were used to transport food and heating materials (coal) into the blockaded city to support the 2 million people of western berlin. Something like this had never been attempted and the Soviets anticipated it's failure, especially once 'their' General Winter came about.

DC3 Airways and it's members have always had a close affinity to this period of history, being the most important use of the Douglas C47/DC3 and DC4 post WW2.

This short 5 session 2018 series seeks both to educate and reenact the first half of the airlift, before the Americans terminated the use of the C47 with greater use of the larger loads available on the DC4. t also was the period when the amphibious flying boat, the Short Sunderland, was used to transport salt into the city using facilities on the river Elbe near Finkenwerder and on Lake Havel close to Gatow.

These 5 sessions will alternate westerly and easterly approaches, involve one night flight and one low visibility flight, using the routes, procedures and airfields that were flown during the airlift.

We hope to have a significant number of on DCA pilots participate too from Flightsim.com, CIX VFR, Bluegrass etc.. To this end we are providing facilities whereby they can join the FSINN server via a special password and there will be a temporary password set up for all of us on the TS3 server for the period of these flights.

By the helpful assistance of DCA1161, DCA1026, DCA2467 and others software packages will be available for FSX/P3D and X-plane.

Here is what is available for FSX/P3D pilots:

    1. A scenery package (adds EDUG Gatow, EDHV Havel and the NDB's)
    2. Text details of all the flightplans
    3. scenery to create the harrassing flak that was present in the corridors
    4. charts showing the approach/departure procedures
    5. scenery for Gatow and the NDB's for X-plane

    Participants should ensure the following:
That they have a DC3/C47, Short Sunderland installed in their sim
That they have installed the scenery and effects
That they have updated their scenery.cfg and flight planning software to ensure that the NDB's specific to the airlift are in place and operating and appear on their digital charts
That they are familiar with their specific approach for the session in question as regards headings, altitudes and airspeeds
It is recommended that you make a test flight of the first session to see that everything works as expected and raise any problems with the Airlift 'committee (DCA996, DCA1161, DCA1026, DCA309)
For non DCA members you wil need the FSINN software configured for the DCA3 server and also the comms software TS3 configured for the DCA MP4 server.

Essentially there are 4 groups of participants, FSX, P3D, X-plane and Non DCA pilots.
The procedure will be that we will start with westerly departures and approaches and alternate west/east thereafter (i.e. session 2 will be easterly)
The 4 groups above will operate from an assigned location so that there are no issues as regards runway alignment or elevation issues.
The TS3 server has been configured with additional channel and sub channel areas for coms purposes to facilitate the diverse arrivals and to avoid having too many pilots on one channel at the same time.

    Comms procedures:
    Join departure channel
switch to Northern/Southern corridor channel when at cruise altitude
10 miles from Berlin entry point (FO Frohnau northern and TF Tempelhof) switch to destination frequency and announce callsign and position to tower
Follow the approach procedures announcing passing each waypoint but listen for Tower calls too. Pilot is responsible for adhering to the approach procedures
Once landed exit runway at far end and taxi to any ramp area for unloading the vistal supplies

    Cruise altitudes:

    Northern Route : Twin eng = 3500 ft *** 4 eng 4500 ft
    Sothernthern Route : Twin eng = 4500 ft *** 4 eng 5500 ft

    Cruise speeds:

Twin engine = climb 110 kts cruise 140 kts

Four engine = climb 120 kts cruise 180 kts

    Take off weights:

    DC3/C47 28,000 lbs

    C54 60000 lbs

Please bear in mind that the aircraft are almost fully loaded and therefor handling will be different to normal operations. This will require care on take off and landings especially.
Each group will be expected to be on the ground at their departure point and holding short ready for 90 second interval departures and be on comms 5 minutes before the start of the session, i.e. by 17:55z.
The separation is crucial since the commencement of departures for each group has taken flight times, aircraft performance and spacing into account to ensure no conflicts arise at any waypoint or on arrival in Berlin.
There will be lite ATC for both of the 2 destinations, Gatow and Tempelhof.

Please do not get phased by the downloads or approach charts. What DCA MP pilots do every week is the same as this, just in these sessions we are constrained to follow the historic routes and procedures to properly commemorate the events of 1948/49.

We are hoping to have a big participation worthy of commemorating the real life events that contributed to the eventual unshackling of Germany from the Soviet yoke and which ultimately ended the cold war and the Soviet bloc.

If the Berlin airlift of 1948/49 had failed, Europe and the wider western world would have been far different today.

We also commemorate the pilots and civilians who lost their lives during this period.

This is the first of 5 sessions commemorating the first 5 months of the Berlin airlift.

During this time only Gatow (EDUG) and Tempelhof (EDDI) were operational, each with only one runway available.

    Here are the details:

    Northern route parameters:

Aircraft cruise alt cruise speed climb speed descent rate
    C47 / DC3 3500 ft 140 knots 110 knots 500 fpm
    all 4 engine 4500 ft 160 knots 110 knots 500 fpm
    Sunderlands 1000 ft 120 knots 110 knots 500 fpm

    Southern route parameters:

Aircraft cruise alt cruise speed climb speed descent rate
    C47 / DC3 4500 ft 140 knots 110 knots 500 fpm
    all 4 engine 5500 ft 160 knots 110 knots 500 fpm

The TS3 server has channels for each airfield and a northern and a southern Enroute Channel.
Start flight on Tower freq of your departure airfield and switch to the appropriate enroute freq when at cruise alt.
When 10 miles from entering Berlin traffic zone (Frohnau NDB (Northern) & Tempelhof NDB (Southern)) switch to destination channel and report position and descend to relevant altitude to cross the NDB (2500 ft) and reduce airspeed to 120 knots. See the Berlin Procedures chart for the headings and timings etc.

    Session 1 - 9th June 18:00z

Join the servers 10 minutes before the start to get configured and holding short of the appropriate runway at your departure point
Flown on the DCA FSINN server - for non DCA members password will be BAL (will be active later this week)
Comms via TS3 on the DCA MP4 server with password BAL (is now active with the revised password)
Weather must be set to CAVOK.

Departures at 90 second intervals and should remain so for the duration. Monitor your airspeed accordingly to ensure 3.5 mile gap.
At some locations, in order to avoid conflicts at waypoints, some blocks of aircraft will be assigned a delayed departure time based on minutes past the hour e.g. Wiesbaden might be assigned a 7 minute delay to ensure that the bloc of possibly 6 aircraft will arrive Darmstadt NDB some 2 minutes after the last aircraft in the Frankfurt bloc.

Assignments for session 1 of 5:

All departures and arrivals on a westerly heading

    ICAO Airport Formation Aircraft type

EDHL Lubeck DCA P3D pilots DC3

ETHB Buckeburg DCA FSX pilots DC3

    ETOU Wiesbaden X-Plane C-47

EDDF Frankfurt All CIX and other non DCA C-47

C54's and Sunderlands will be introduced from week 2 and Avro Yorks from week 3.

I would recommend the Jens B. Kristensen C54 from Flightsim.com at the following link for FSX users:
    https://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/fslib...rchid=64246865

The Avro York by Manfred Jahn can be found at flightsim.com also.
    The Sunderland is there too.

You will need these extra aircraft if you are to see the non DCA pilots correctly in weeks 2-5.

Some P3D pilots have the Flight Replicas DC4 for use in later sessions.

I will be posting a zip file on the file browser area of the DCA MP4 TS3 server for downloading for the soviet flak.

I will be in TS3 from 8pm UK time if anyone would like assistance in installation.

A final request that if anyone is intending to participate, please contact me for connection details to the DC3 Airways TS3 server which has a special password for this event.

It is being hosted via FSINN so you can either install and set up FSINN or install FSD proxy and use Vpilot to join (which frankly is a lot easier). If you want details of the connection parameters please let me know.

    Berlin airlift flight #2 June 16th 18:00z

This is the 2nd of 5 sessions commemorating the first 5 months of the Berlin airlift.

During this time only Gatow (EDUG) and Tempelhof (EDDI) were operational, each with only one runway available, and also the Havel Lake amphibious operations with Short Sunderland flying boats.

    Here are the details:

    Northern route parameters:
Aircraft cruise alt cruise speed climb speed descent rate
    C47 / DC3 3500 ft 140 knots 110 knots 500 fpm
    all 4 engine 4500 ft 160 knots 110 knots 500 fpm
    Sunderlands 1000 ft 120 knots 110 knots 500 fpm

    Southern route parameters:
Aircraft cruise alt cruise speed climb speed descent rate
    C47 / DC3 4500 ft 140 knots 110 knots 500 fpm
    all 4 engine 5500 ft 160 knots 110 knots 500 fpm

The TS3 server has channels for each airfield and a northern and a southern Enroute Channel.
Start your flight on the Tower frequency of your departure airfield and switch to the appropriate enroute frequency when at cruise alt.

    Session 2 - 16th June 18:00z (SET SIMULATOR TIME TO 20:55 LOCAL)

Join the servers 10 minutes before the start to get configured and holding short of the appropriate runway at your departure point
Flown on the DCA FSINN server - for non DCA members password will be BAL (now active)
Comms via TS3 on the DCA MP4 server with password BAL (is now active with the revised password)
Weather should be set to CAVOK.

Departures at 90 second intervals and should remain so for the duration. Monitor your airspeed accordingly to ensure 3.5 mile gap approx. to the aircraft ahead.
At some locations, in order to avoid conflicts at waypoints, some blocks of aircraft will be assigned a delayed departure time based on minutes past the hour.

Assignments for session 2 of 5:

All departures and arrivals on an Easterly heading

    ICAO Airport Formation Aircraft type

EDDH Hamburg Non DCA pilots (no Sunderland) DC3
EDHJ Finkenwerder Non DCA pilots Sunderland flying boat

    ETNW Wunstorf P3D DC3 or DC4

    EDHL Lubeck X-Plane DC3
    (Blankensee)

ETOU Wiesbaden FSX pilots without a C54 C-47

EDDF Frankfurt FSX pilots with a C54 C-54

I would recommend the Jens B. Kristensen C54 from Flightsim.com at the following link for FSX users:
    https://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/fslib.ph ... d=64246865

For P3D there is the Flight Replicas DC4 but this is payware.

The Avro York by Manfred Jahn can be found at flightsim.com also.
    The Sunderland is there too.

You will need these extra aircraft if you are to see the non DCA pilots correctly in weeks 2-5.

Please note the very different approaches compared to the westerly approaches. (i.e. depart to the west and land at destination on a westerly heading)

On Thursday I will be attaching a zip file to the file browser area of the DCA channel for FSX and P3D pilots to add flak to the corridors.

I will also post the routes for Hamburg, Finkenwerder and Wunstorf on Thursday in text format.
