Stratojet Excalibur Problem

Recommended Posts

Referring to the Stratojet Excalibur supersonic business jet.

When stationary with brakes engaged, I start the engines and the aircraft shoots off at quite a rate, taking a good 100 yards to bring to a stop.

I have noticed that the wheels sit slightly above the ground but not sure if this is related ?

Changing the static_cg_height does not seem to lower the aircraft to the ground (aircraft contact points as follows):

[contact_points]

static_pitch = 0.0

static_cg_height = 6.1

gear_system_type = 0

max_number_of_points = 11

HELP !

Kind regards

Frank

There is nothing wrong with the cnt pts. It is perfect in FS2004. You set the parking brake and it won't move when the engines start. It's from 2006 and was as good as it got for freeware. That version zip file name is 'ej_ex_2.zip' (version 2) by Eugene Heyart. If you don't have the C-182 as your default flight on start of FS9 then that is probably the cause of your problem(s).

Philippe Wallaert released an updated FSX version of the Stratojet Excalibur in 2014, including a wide aspect 2D panel, VC mods, and fixes. It can be found over at Simviation.com. Only problem I had with it was some pitch instability in cruise - porpoising, easily fixed by adjusting elevator effectiveness and pitch stability in its aircraft.cfg.

Went to AvSim and got 'stratojet_excaliber-1.zip', 9,195 Kb, 1/19/2014. Install in FSX Accel. Got it going Mach 2.2 at FL300 (no porpoiseing) and then threw an ILS (Auto Land) and it worked perfect (landed it at 130 kts). The 2D panel is 'Lear' like - VERY NICE. I hand flew it 8000 ft to 4500 ft (set up ILS approach using GPS) and speed control was a dream come true. It's perfect. Again, if your default flight is not C-172 then you might have problems (is there an echo in here?).

Chuck, I observed the pitch instability when in cruise up past FL500, where a supersonic business jet would actually fly ... if they were ever actually built.

I'm envious of X-Planers who have this interesting Russian SSB ... another intriguing design that never reached the hardware stage.

Thank you for your help with my Excalibur problem.

I forgot to mention that I use FSX Steam and this aircraft was designed for FS2004. Maybe this is part of the problem ?

As for the default aircraft. Are you advising that I have the Cessna C172 set as the default and then simply change over to the Excalibur once FlightSim has fired up ?

Hello again everyone

I seem to have solved the problem by increasing the toe brake scale to 2.5 as thus;

[brakes]

toe_brakes_scale =2.5

parking_brake =1

The aircraft no longer shoots forward on engine start-up.

However, I haven't checked if this new figure has caused any different problems yet !!

We still don't know which ZIP file (ie: version) you have installed. Would be nice to know. The FS9 versions may have problems in FSX. I did notice that 'Stratojet_Excaliber-1.zip' did have the wheel vertical changed from 6.4 to 6.0. So the model may be different from prior versions. It worked ok in FSX Accel. And I did get tire smoke at the slightest bump in asphalt when going faster than taxi speed. So the compression might be wrong.

And YES I was suggesting you have the C-182 in FS9 or the C-172 in FSX as the start-up, or, 'Default' flight on first running sim. That sets up various parameters that are vital. After it loads you then can change to any other model and not have any problems IF the model is good.

Hello Chuck

This is the version of Excalibur which I use;

S2004 (ACOF) - FS2004 Business Jets

FS2004 Stratojet Excalibur

[ Download | View ]

Name: sj_ex_2.zip

Size: 13,048,708 Date: 10-23-2006 Downloads: 9,564

I did try using the C172 as default but it made no difference. But increasing the brake scale has sorted out the problem.

Kind regards

Frank
