performance 7700k vs 8700k

P3Dv4 had a slow start so I took a break. Today, 9 months since, I had a flight with my 2014 4790k which seems like it is time for it to retire.

So I see that the top of the line coffee lake 8700k is 3.7ghz, slower than the older kaby lake 7700k. I imagine the end effect may not depend on speed alone, so please explain what would be a better option and how does this work. Also, what gain both options do compared to my 4790k.

I did some preliminary googling, I don't see this type of discussions anywhere, I need some info from knowledgeable people I know present on this forum before I can proceed any further please.

If you are speaking primarily about P3D - I'd say the 7700 is still the best bang for the buck. Most can be easily clocked to 5ghz or close which is more than enough to handle P3D. Coupled with a string GPU - 1080 or 1080Ti - it's the way to go.

8700 has more cores but with the old ESP acrhitecture - it doesn't translate to enough better performance to warrant the cost. P3D is not hyperthreading aware so there is no benefit there.

So, IMHO the 7700 is a better fit.

Now I'm about to put $600-700 into cup+board upgrade, won't make me go broke but still... I hope to see an improvement in the areas where I suffer now: big cities, custom airports and aircraft by PMDG/FSLabs where I get as low as 17 fps with 4790k even with traffic set to low 30% and airport textures to 1024 (never 2048), building shadows off, etc off, off and off. Will 7700k give me a boost of 5 fps?? All I need is a steady 22 where it is currently 17-18.

If 5 fps boost is not possible, what is and what should I expect? If the gain is another 1.5 fps then it make sense to keep what I have and wait for 10mm series.

ps. approach over default Los Angeles (scenery/autogen NOT maxed) with FSL A320 or PMDG 777 with 4790k will bring you down to 14 fps.

well, I run at 5ghz with my 7700 and I just lock at 20 and don't look at it. as long as it's smooth, I'm a happy camper. My default flight is where I live - KBUR - so I'm flying a lot in the LA Basin with most settings at or near max - lock at 20 and never look back. If you can spring for a 4K monitor it will be a big plus because you can ignore AA settings that kill fps.

Vic I have a curved 34", downgrading (in terms of size) to a smaller flat 4K will be "ouch".

Will have to wait for a big curved 4K if we'll be still alive by then, may take a while.

I have as low as 14 fps sometimes, that's the problem. Will I have to reinstall windows if I hook up my hard drive to a new board with 7700 cpu and what board do you recommend compatible with future 14mm CPUs?

(I don't think the 10mm is coming soon, we'll keep seeing new 14mm cpu for some time).

Don't even try to get windows to accept the new setup. Bite the bullet and do a complete reinstall - you will save yourself a lot of grief in the long run.

the third and final component I need is DDR4 RAM. This one is tough, there are million types. What do I need?

Ok so I had a flight with this 7700k upgrade, FSLabs A320 KSFO-KLAX, basically where there's been a problem before, there will always be a problem no matter the hardware. Perhaps CannonLake will give us some juice, though few additional fps (what I was hopping for from the start) the 7700k did provide, going from 14-20 to 18-22 over LA and at KLAX, sliders same as before, can't up them.

I feel Xplane11 will shine, will try these weekends. Prepar3D did the unthinkable: made it 64bit, now I hope they work on making it multicore.

I have a 7700, running at the native 4.2 GHz on an Asus Z170-A motherboard. When I first got the MB, the BIOS level was 900. After reading carefully up on the update process and making sure I could do it safely, I updated the BIOS to 3504. The speed increase was simply unbelievable.

What is your RAM speed? I have 16 GB of 2133 MHz DDR4, which I believe now is slowing me down, so I am considering getting 16 GB of 3400 or 3200 MHz, but have to look around for some with the right timings for the Z170-A.
