Why don't they tell us ?

Hello; This has probably been asked many times but I'm going to ask it again please. When I've d/l textures for example for the default 747 I follow the instructions in readme and adjust aircraft.cfg and then go to see if it showed up. It did but was missing wings engines etc. found out the texture download had to be placed in an existing texture folder which then overwrote some files and the plane showed up. Seems to me that if one is going to offer textures they should be clearly explained on how to install them. Spent lots of time figuring this out. Robin :(

The main 747 texture folder is 11 Mb. The repaint is 2.69 Mb. So to save download file size, and because FSX allows you to provide a texture.cfg that does 'falls back' to the full set of textures, they do it that way. Here contents of texture.cfg.

[fltsim]

fallback.1=..\texture

fallback.2=..\..\..\..\Scenery\Global\texture

fallback.3=..\..\..\..\..\..\Scenery\Global\texture

If you want to customize structure where you only have 1 texture folder, you make a folder called 'texture' and include all the *.dds files from orig 'texture' folder. Then you copy, then paste, the repaint files and say yes to overwrite. You can then remove the texture.cfg as you have combined the two 'sets' and don't need to do 'fall back'. They don't tell you everything is right.
