FSX Performance in a Virtual Machine

Recommended Posts

Unless you're trying to run FSX on a Mac or Linux machine, running in a VM is just going to hurt performance. FSX needs as much CPU power as it gets and a VM is just going to add another layer that sucks up resources.

The OS and any application running inside the VM is going to see however many CPU cores have been dedicated to the VM and treat them as separate cores. VMs aren't going to combine the CPU cores into one more powerful core. If you assign 4 cores to the VM, then the OS inside the VM will see 4 cores. Then there is the issue of graphics performance. Most VMs focus on either basic 3D performance to support Windows Aero or workstation type 3D applications such as AutoCAD. Gaming performance isn't usually a high priority.
