Ideal monitor for FSX and X Plane 11

I am updating to a new Alienware Aurora system but am undecided about the monitor. Dell are offering a 24" 4K option (P2415Q) but some people have said the very high resolution may make gauges and menus hard to read and for a 24" screen full HD is fine.

Any opinions?

I have a Dell 23 inch HD, 2048x1152 native res. $199 including shipping at Amazon. 8,000 to 1 contrast ratio, built in 2.0 mp web cam. Height and Tilt adjust simply by moving screen. You plug it in and Windows installs drivers for it - no fiddleing with menus, etc. It (including my PC) has been turned on for 2 years straight 24/7 (no screen saver or 'sleeping' allowed!! hehe). No issues. This model has been discontinued but it still kicks ash if you ask me. Love it.

Driving a 4k monitor takes lots of graphics power, a needing high end graphics card: gtx 1070 (barely) a minimum. For 24" 4k res is a bit of overkill IMO (yes I know, the 4k image quality at 24" is amazing). Consider also 2k (2560 x 1440) monitors for the 24" size family. IMO that res is the sweet spot now-a-days for that size.

I use this 25" monitor: https://www.asus.com/us/Commercial-Monitors/PB258Q/

Flight sims look a dream on it, though if you are into twitch master FPS games it won't serve you well. No FSX menu size problem, at least for me. The ONLY reason I use a 25" monitor is my limited desk area. If size wasn't an issue I definitely would have (and recommend) a 27" or 30" panel. 24" is the max size for FHD (1920x1080), FHD monitors beyond that size will have noticeable "graininess".

You can't go wrong with 27" 2560x1440. Everything is nice and big and crisp. Just make sure that your refresh rate is 5ms or better for nice smooth graphics. Or you can go one step up from there and get a 34" 3440x1440 monitor (21:9 aspect ratio). It is like having two monitors side-by-side without the bezel in-between and great for extra peripheral vision in flight sims. That is what I currently have after a 27" and a triple-screen setup. Triple screen was nice but unwieldy and took up a lot of space and tricky to set up in some programs. I don't miss the triple-screen or 27" at all - 34" 21:9 is the best combination of all of those.

Hi Captain,

I'm using a 23" monitor. I have a CH yoke and I have the monitor positioned so that the back of the control just misses the monitor. When I use the hat switch to pan down to look at the display yoke or when look down to look at the CH one they appear the same size. I do not have the forced wide angle view enabled in FSX.cfg. I have my default zoom set to 1.00. These settings greatly reduce what I see on the screen at any one time. But what I do see is what I believe is close to what I'd see in reality. I have the trigger on my controllers set to "Look forward (3-D cockpit)" so that after looking around in the VC (or in any view) I'm instantly returned to looking straight forward in the cockpit.

I've seen some YouTube videos, which were praised as being realistic, in which the yoke appears to be the size of a donut. Different strokes as they say.

For response time, try to get a 5ms or less monitor.

I'm using an Asus 27" (VK278Q) with TrackIR, perfect for my needs,

flying mostly bush and amphibian planes.

Look at the pic of my little set-up to have an idea of the size ratio of

a 27" monitor close(over) a Saitek yoke.

Hello Capt. Rox!

I am planning to purchase a new Aleinware Aurora myself. I was wondering how yours is working out and which monitor you ended up getting...

I'm also planning on purchasing FSX ES as well.

Also, which add-ons are you running? Are you running Captain Sim C-130? CLS DC-10?

Thanks in advance!
