All I know is that there used to be some Rick Piper models at Skysim, but I hear he's now uploaded them to here-

and he was talking to people in their forum in June 2016, (scroll down to the 7th post) so he's still around if you want to register there and talk to him about what happened to all the Skysim stuff-

By the way, can I ask whether anyone knows why Skysim closed down?

Usually a site will close down due to lack of funds to maintain the domain name and server. This is probably the best answer about the other sites you were asking about over at AVSIM, also. Another reason could be lack of traffic on the site or age and/or health of the owners.

Well, who knows the real reason?

No-one but the website owner himself. As Mr Zippy has explained, there could be several reasons. Websites don't last forever and neither do the files hosted on them, but there is an internet archive where you can enter an old website address and see if anything pops up: https://archive.org/web/ Good Luck!
