Platinum Airways, the Open Skies virtual airline, will be visiting four fall foliage fields in the month of October. Don’t expect to be flying heavies: all four airfields can only handle light general aviation aircraft.

October in the northern hemisphere comes with the splendour of an abundance of colours in forest regions. As nature is preparing for winter sleep, Platinum Airways traditionally selects Destination of the Week airports that present an ultimate experience as far as tapestry scenery is concerned. This year, we’re focusing on bush type of airfields. The first Fall DOTW is Kempten-Durach Airport (EDMK) in Germany’s southern Bavaria region. From there, we cross the Atlantic to Boonville (1NK7) in northern New York State. For our third Fall destination, we need to tamper with the seasons settings. Mount Hotham (YHOT) is Australia’s highest altitude airport in the country’s Victorian Alps. And we conclude Fall with a visit to Idaho’s Big Island Airfield (ID29), next to a small lake and surrounded by trees.

Flying into bush airfields comes with its challenges on pilots and DOTW management. Don’t expect official charts for each airfield, but we’ll provide you with the best guidance that we can find. Many of these airfields do come with add-on scenery, and links will be included. Luckily, videos will not present issues and both approach and departure videos will be embedded.

About Platinum Airways:

Keen to deliver on its mission to keep the fun in the hobby, Platinum Airways is probably the only virtual airline to combine an Open Skies policy, allowing its pilots to fly any mission of their choice with the aircraft of their choice at the time of their choice, with a strategic hub network. The carefully selected hubs, Newark (KEWR), Dallas-Fort Worth (KDFW), Vancouver (CYVR), Perth (YPPH) and Brussels (EBBR), should be attractive to a global membership. In addition, Platinum Airways offers its pilots an often cheeky Destination of the Week, Military and Cargo. Sticking to the KISS principle (Keep It Straight and Simple), Platinum Airways hosts an active forum and a screenshot of the week competition, with the winner providing the main picture on its home page for the next week.
