PlymouthFury
Greetings! My father, Felix Gilbert, was a navigator and pilot, 8th Air Force, England, WWII. He died at an air show in Canada simulating WWII dog fights, flying an AT-6 against a Messerschmitt. I'm fairly obsessed with flight (tho not a pilot myself), WWII, and am quite loyal to my father's memory. As an actor, I'm narrating an audio book called GLORIOUS SPITFIRE, it is a labor of love, and quite technical. I found your site today trying to figure out the pronunciation for Vaught Corsair (got it, thx!) and decided to join your group. I suspect some of you will enjoy the audio book when it's released in 4-6 weeks on Audible.com. If anyone knew my father, I'd love to hear from you. Cheers. cwperkins
I've had the pleasure of meeting a number of WWII pilots and crew over the years. Your Dad with a DFC and having flown with/near Jimmy Stewart certainly would have had great stories to tell. There is a great effort in the Flight sim community to accurately reproduce vintage aircraft and explain their history. Please keep us posted on the audio book. PhantomTweak
Gee, I always thought it was pronnounced "VOT", no R. There I go thinking again :D I'll learn someday! When I met Maj. Boyington at the standup of VMFAT-513 at Yuma, harriers now, he pronnounced it "VOT". I figgered he would know... Great guy, by the way. Not the tallest in the world, bout the same as Robert Conrad, who played him in the TV show. Neither one had "short-man's disease", though. Just a LOT of personality, and the war stories were incredible. The TV show barely scratched the surface of his experiences. Welcome to the foums, we all hope you enjoy your time here :pilot: Pat☺ [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Had a thought...then there was the smell of something burning, and sparks, and then a big fire, and then the lights went out! I guess I better not do that again! Sgt, USMC, 10 years proud service, Inactive reserve now :D
il88pp
I'm no native speaker of English, but people say my pronunciation of it is pretty good. (Of course the English themselves would never say otherwise, for they are a very polite people...) Found this, and sort of agree with this way of pronouncing it. (Not knowing the specific aircraft mind you. But don't see why that would be pronounced any different.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHaqUjR6CdA [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
PhantomTweak
Well, I think that says it all :p ;) il, I never thought of you as a non-native English (or American, for that matter) speaker. Color me suprized :D Great day, and wonderful flights to all! il88pp
:) Thanks! I startd learning English when still very young. My first comics were "The Broons", "Oor Wullie", and "The Peanuts". All in English. I asked my mum about the pronunciation of the words, and learned quickly. Loved those books, and the language. The one time I travelled to Schotland, at 14 or so, I surprised our host by blurting out fluent Schottish. Talking 'boot the "Butt 'n Ben" "Whure's me Bucket" and "a Moose!" and such... Ah yes, good times. Welcome to he Forum PlymouthFury!:) Enjoy, il88pp [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
napamule2
Welcome aboard. It is 'Vut' (Vaught) like in 'aught' (aut). New York City!!?? (hehe-not that there's anything wrong with that...). We need more female pilots in here (to keep the rude guys in check-ha). And what does 'PlymouthFury' mean? Just curious. Good luck with your ebook. Will it be on Amazon? Cheers.
