Spruce Goose FSX version won't take off from water

I wondered if someone could help me, i have just installed the Spruce Goose FSX version but as I try to get it take off from the water from the longbeach site near the museum but as you get up speed it just splahes and crashes and resets the flight. I have copied and pasted the suggested aircraft config contact points with no landing gear and I also tried it with the flaps fully down but still no joy. it only seems to like hard runway. if anyone has the fixed file of this aircraft i would be very grateful.

P.S.

I hope that I am not shouting on this forum

Welcome to the forum. You might also want to check the elevator trim. Sometimes the amphibians will "stick" a bit on the water. More up elevator trim may help.

If you're talking about the Spruce Goose from this Flightsim.com site, I just downloaded it and it works fine without any contact points tweaking, here's a screenshot I took 5 minutes ago of it taking off into a 16kts headwind from an ordinary lake which I slewed to, it unsticks dead easy with or without any flap provided you follow W2DR's's advice and put in up trim.

I guarantee that if you hold the uptrim key down for about 5 seconds the plane will leap into the air at around 110 knots.

Why are you at Long Beach? Maybe the water's too shallow there or something.

Oh, and DON'T mess with config files or contact points or file tweaking with any aircraft til you've tried the simplest remedies first..:)

PS- the "oodles of uptrim" trick also works with other planes too (seaplanes and landplanes) if they seem shy of unsticking, so just jam your finger on the uptrim key and keep it there.

You gotta fly it at Long Beach. At least for the maiden flight. The first, and only, time the Goose ever flew was in Long Beach Harbor.

SkatterbrainKid is right. But if you want to try NEW cnt pts (good for those 'required' landings) try these. One for Normal Load and one for Heavy Loaded H4. (7/04/2014): With these cnt pts you take off and land on land too. Video:

Copy and paste BOTH to cfg. Comment out the (contact_points) section you have now - no need to delete - in case you want to go back and re-try them to compare. Comment out ONE of my cnt pts section - the one you don't want/need. Do a 'SAVE' and 'yes' to overwrite. Reload the Goose. Try it out. You can then try the other one by uncommenting IT and commenting out the other one. Comment out means putting '//' in front of each line you don't want Sim to 'read'. It will not hurt anything. Sim will ignore anything after '//'. Happy Gooseing.

I have FSX Sp2. I too have tried FSX_SpruceGoose.zip. I can't get it to stop with either the "." key or my Saitek joystick. I've tried every tweak in this thread with no change. In napamule's video the flaps move on the wings, not in my sim. I've pretty much given up on this bird. A seaplane with no landing gear that only works on land and "splashes" when it touches water. Anything that needs this much tweaking isn't worth it.

For the record, this is the Flightsim.com download I'm talking about which works perfectly in my FSX Gold, the flaps work, it takes off from water fine, and lands back on it in a sixpence and slows to a stop without brakes.

Eat should leaf the wader without having to pool wey beck on the stich (due to giving it up pitch treem - about +4.00 mex). Pulleng back on stick causes tail to strike the water as it takes off 'not level'. The real one took off LEVEL and gradually (not leap into air). Like this:

Those are scrapes (type.2) and co-relate to the physical surfaces (belly, wing, nose, tail) of the airplane. They are not needed at all (optional). I gave it retractable (for water landing) gear (type.1) even tho the model doesn't have gear. Works anyway. So I modified it (and the dynamics) so it's not 'stock' FDE.

dear sir,

i have a set of CFG/AIR files for the original plane, not the welker version.

it takes off at the speed the REAL one lifted off at the "taxi test" 125 mph / 108.6 knotss at MTOW of 400000 lbs.

NO undercarriage contact points, REALLY do not understand who added them and why, no fouling around with

'thousands" of contact points.

the CFG is wrong you have, the plane had 3000hp and NOT 6000hp why NOT using 100000hp to make the thing fly ,the WINGAREA is wrong as well etc etc

CONTACT me at me email NOT at this forum with all the experts recommending "funny" technical advise ..

This an interesting very old thread. Our hobby is called "Flight Simming." To me that means trying to "simulate" RW conditions as close as possible in the flight models of our aircraft.

According to what I read, the H 4 traveled approximately one (1) mile and never left ground effect. The "payload" was a total of 32 people, including crew aboard. I couldn't handily find the fuel on board but it was probably very minimal.

So, if we are correctly simming the H-4 we should fly about 1 mile above the waters near Long Beach and never climb out of Ground Effect. ;)

Taking all that into consideration. I believe the original description of the "sim" in question is probably pretty accurate!

In the Sims, and with 'experimental', you try to get some performance, some handling, and some stability that suits THE SIM, not the FAA. OK? OK!

Rupert, to complete the story as I have read it, the pilot in command was Mr. Howard Hughes, and the mile was flown at about 20 ft.

Jorgen

That's exactly my point!! Some consider FSX a sim. Others consider FSX a game. P3D also says it's a sim. But both programs are hugely happy to get the money from those who consider both programs a game.

Whether it be FSX, P3D, or whatever another "Sim" program is called. I've flown real world and I hope my "Sim" will be as close to replicating that RW flying experience!

If you're not trying your best to replicate RW flying experiences, you are selling a GAME! And there are a huge number of GAMES which are much better than FSX, P3D, etc. at gaming! So if you're trying to be a gaming program, you need to upgrade your bling! It you are trying to be a flight sim program, you need to up your Real World Simulations as well!!

Rupert

We're not "Gamers!" We are "Flight Simulators!" IMHO opinion, THERE IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE!!

So you flew the Spruce Goose? Or maybe know where one can rent one and fly it? Or know someone that flew it? And do those 'games' have a Spruce Goose? So it's experimental and so it can do things that might surprise you. But you can then 'program' those specs to suit your 'experience' with simular airplanes you flew. Or you can just have fun with this bird and let it go. FAA can go fly a kite.

I didn't shoot your dog! If impossible scenarios is what works for you, that's fine. But don't insult the rest of us by calling it a sim!!

I have to once again wonder if you are interested in FSX as a game or a sim?? If you love games I encourage you to go out and play them!! There are tons of games which have better everything compared to FSX or P3Dv3. But I still feel that FSX and P3D are mostly trying to simulate RW flying, not gaming experiences.

I'm an old RW pilot who likes to see and use a "sim" that simulates the Real World Experiences those of us who fly or in my case flew in the Real World might experience!

Since there was an aircraft called the Spruce Goose that never flew out of ground effect, that's how I hope it will be simulated! It either flew or it didn't!!

If that plane is ever shown to be an aircraft which ever flew above ground effect, IMHO this insn't a flight simulation of a RW aircraft!!!!! This program has become a "game!"

If you choose, you may play on! There are a ton of wonderful games. Personally I'm an old guy who hopes to SIMULATE the RW flights I can no longer fly!!
