Gonna be shooting up to a AMD 2400+, actually its really not much faster in MHZ than my computer, but I think its specially clocked to match the Intel at 2.4 ghz }> No other real changes.

XP2800+ due out in a month. It will be AMD's first 333 Mhz FSB processor and should be as stable an overclock as the 2400 and 2600+. I don't plan on upgrading again for at least 2 years, but there's no harm in dreaming, lol.

How do you know when it's time to upgrade your computer? As soon as you get the latest copy of flightsim, it's time!

My current system is showing its age (PIII 800) and I'm going to be upgrading soon. I'm waiting for the release of motherboards with the Granite Bay chipset (dual channel DDR RAM) that provide equal memory bandwidth as Rambus RAM, but allow for the use of cheaper DDR RAM. I doubt I'll be getting a 3 GHz processor as the price will be prohibitive. However, the 2.53 GHz CPU's are looking good and should drop in price after the release of the 3 GHz models. Granted, they don't support hyperthreading (HT), but few of my programs would support SMP or HT so I won't see much of an advantage. Also, I don't run a lot of programs at the same time that require that much horsepower and would take advantage of HT.

Anyway, as I'm using about all of my cash to build x-country hours so I can take my IR checkride, I'd better not be diverting too much money to other ventures.

    Yes.....

The 9700 works well with the new P4 2.8GHz (overclocked to 3.2G)
Hz) system I built a couple of days ago.

On my previous system (Dual XP1800's), I had a few problems with it. It would occasionally lock up and the color intensity wasn't as good as the Ti-4600.

On the new system, I set the max FPS to 25, and I never see it drop below it, including around airports like ORD and LAX.

This weeks project is to get the dual XP1800 system linked to the new rig and try out Wideview for multiple 3D panels.

    Cheers!

Can you try something for us all that are disappointed with frame rates on FS2002 with P4 1.8Ghz performance. If you put the sliders up to max on displays and put sound and ATC to 100%, (for example, max it all out) what frame rates do you get for example at Heathrow London say from the spot plane view with a Jumbo Jet in view and 100% AI traffic running..??
Would love to know if P4 3Ghz will handle the game. As P4 1.8Ghz just about copes but one has to compensate with sliders up and down depending on where one goes in the world of scenery.

I don't think Intel has offered a Pentium big enough for FS2002 with everything full on yet. If the code isn't limited in FS2002, I'd guess a PIV 4+gig machine would probably do it. I run with most everything maxed (mesh at 90%) and ATC at 40% or less just cause I'm not that interested in ATC. Haven't ventured any higher with ATC yet for those reasons; but my 2.53 runs everything fine with terrain all the way to the horizon with a picture that I'd never complain about. I tried 6xAA and found it totally unnecessary and found I lost just a bit of the "terrain all the way to the horizon" effect, but 16xAF is necessary after having run at 8xAF for awhile. I think mine's at about the limit because I won't give up "terrain all the way to the horizon" with clouds on in a demanding aircraft after having saw what a beauty this sim really is.
