Night Moves: CV-240 Windows Displaced by Alien Lasers?

Recommended Posts

This is the first time I've flown my new CC/VBF Convair 240 with its Ethiopian Air Lines livery at night. Imagine my shock when I discovered that the illumination from the last 5 windows on the starboard side had been moved aft by some unknown force!

I tried to open the texture files to see what was going on, but Windows Photo Viewer and Paint both say that despite the fact that they are BMP files, they are in an "unsupported format" so I can't even look at them. So I tried them in GIMP and got the same response: unsupported format.

Anybody know what could cause this?

Does anyone else have this airplane and texture, and if so, are your windows like this at night?

You'll probably need DXTBmp to view and convert them to editable BMP's

I suspect. Looks like the alpha channel on the rear fuselage texture got

placed wrong or something like that. I'm assuming there is a front and rear

texture being as it looks like the front one is OK from what I can tell.

Looks like the alpha channel might have got reversed backwards sorta..

Or.. they used the front alpha for the rear texture by mistake.

Looking at it a bit more, judging by the position of the windows, it might

just be reversed.

Interesting to say the least! I tried the American Airlines paint and it looked OK on both sides of the aircraft. I tried the Ethiopian paint on 2 of the models and both had the problem! Ya might want to get rid of the advertisement on the elevators.

ConValuted 240 (with adverts?). Cheesh. Here is a better (?) pic.

I don't have the AA paint (because it's incompatible with the VBF version of this model that I have to use so the Ethiopian Air Lines livery will "fit" it) but I did try the default paint for my model, the Convair prototype, and its windows are fine at night. So it's definitely an issue with the EAL paint.

Holy crass commercialism, Batman!

I hadn't noticed the ads on my elevators, but sure enough, I'm afflicted with them too... but only at night! During the day, my elevators are blissfully ad-free.

Here is a 'color corrected' pic. Is it better? To me it's too dark to see the 'spam'.

OK- this repaint is fully fixed, thanks to Gary Harper (and StringBean,) and I'd like to share it now by uploading the fixed version to the Library- but it's not mine to upload.

I posted on the CalClassics forum thread for this Convair, asking for anyone from VBF to contact me with permission to upload the fixed paint file to Flightsim and any other freeware distribution sites VBF wanted it uploaded to. Tom Gibson responded that VBF was headed by Hans Hermann but that he had been inactive there since last August.

I PM'd Hans, but based on his lengthy period of inactivity, I have no confidence that he'll even be aware of the PM, much less respond to it.

So, if I don't hear back from him, what is the protocol for uploading repaired files that somebody else wrote, and a 3rd person repaired? Is it OK to upload the freeware file to our Library as long as the author and fixer are given full credit for their work, especially since the repaint (and all other VBF projects) seem to have been abandoned?

Meanwhile, I would like to email the fixed repaint to the 3 people I know for sure have this texture- Mrzippy, napamule2 and Peer01... but I don't have all 3 email addresses and there doesn't seem to be any way to attach a file in Flightsim's PM area.

Anybody got any ideas?

The prudent thing to do is to be able to upload the complete aircraft (cfg, air, model, panel, sound and textures) as a zip file. That way all the necessary files would be in one place without having to go hunt and do other downloads.

The policy is that if you make changes for your own use, then you don't need the author of the model for permission. Sharing it with 'friends' is also ok. But any upload would. Tom Gibson should of said 'ok' as it's his model. But since the gents that made 'improvements' to model and textures (that did not 'work') would have to admit they messed up before they agree to you uploading a 'fix' (and that might not happen). The 'improvements' were done by these gents (one for Germany and the other from the UK) back in 2010, and for FS9, so good luck with any emails finding them.

You could upload to a file host (MediaFire, etc) and provide a link (via email) to whomever might want those files and that is (I assume) 'OK'. You would have to zip the files up to upload to file host. It's a drag but it's a 'legal' situation. Cheers.

As long as you only upload files you create, or have permission to distribute, you should be OK.

I disagree with Chuck that you should package up the whole plane, unless you are given permission to by the original author(s).

Include in your upload information as to where to find the original files.

Never assume it is OK to distribute the works of others simply because you cannot get in contact with them.

I guess you could make a 'cfg and air' zip. Then a 'model' zip. Then a 'panel' zip. Then the 'textures' zip. Then the 'required files' zip. Then the 'sound' (alias) zip. Then the 'effects' zip. Then the 'gauges' zip. Then the 'docs' zip. Then the 'port over' zip. And all the zip files would have an 'exe' installer (that installed to a 'aircraft' folder, as the CV-240 was supposed to be for 'FS9 Only' and the modeler won't 'approve' any uploads it they are to be used in FSX (he would not want to 'deal' with the 'support' issues).

Oh, wait. Didn't we just do all of that? Hum. Forget it.
