Thread: FSX Gold Edition download version re-installation & directory assignment

Question FSX Gold Edition download version re-installation & directory assignment

    Dear FS-community,

Almost 10 years after the release of FS9 and more than 6 years after FSX, I have finally purchased a copy of the FSX Gold Edition from Microsoft Xbox store as a download version.

I have a question about the installation part: Is there a way to reinstall the flightsim from the cab-files without using the "Games for Windows marketplace client"? After installing FSX for the first time, the client deletes all the cab-files, and if I want to uninstall and then reinstall the sim, I have to download the whole FSX from the marketplace again, which is no joke given a total file size of 11 GB. Essentially I want to keep the cab-files in a safe place and start installation using them without having to use the client.

Another problem I have with the client is that it puts the FSX folder inside the "Microsoft Games" parent folder, which is annoying. I want to be able to assign the FSX folder directly into, let's say, D: -drive. If you have the DVD edition of the FSX, you can manually assign the folder. The Microsoft client allows you to select the folder under "settings", but as I stated, the client creates the "Microsoft Games" parent folder iniside the assigned folder, and you have to double click on that to open the FSX folder.

Did anyone of you who purchased the Gold Edition online ran into the same problem and knows how to resolve it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

To keep the downloaded .cab files, why not simply make a copy of them and move to a DVD or other area of the hard drive before running the installation?

Yes, that was my idea too. But how do I initiate the install process from these files? On the DVD, I assume you have the directly accessible setup.exe-file besides the cab-files and some other files. However, I only have the cab-files and no setup.exe-file. I would need to extract one of the cab-files, but I don't know which one.

That is most likely a virus protection or permissions issue.

As we have no idea of your operating system we cannot assist further.

In any case, why do you want to save the .cab files?

Install FSX, following the accumulated wisdom, install Acceleration, following the accumulated wisdom.

Then back up the whole of the created folder called Flight Simulator X and you have a readily-accessible backup which requires no installation unless you want to install to a different drive or folder system, and even then you come here for guidance on how to do that with a pristine copy and we show you how to do so without re-installing.

I do not think it is possible to install FSX from the cab files about all you can do with these would be to replace a missing file(s)
The other issue you might run into is because the way Microsoft if you uninstall and reinstall FSX on the same system as before you have to unlock it first, This is what M$ used to prevent piracy.

Not so. the MS security is a post-installation system. Our poster can probably manage with a setup.exe, but again, more information required before technical assistance may be offered.

My operating system is Windows 7 (32 bit). I don't think it is a virus protection issue. As I said before, the only way to install the download version of FSX Gold is to use the Games for Windows Marketplace client by opening it and clicking "Install" on the right side at the download list inside the client. But even then, I don't see the FSX own installation procedure window - instead there is a primitive bar in the client that shows me the progress without providing any information on what the installer is currently doing.

The problem is that after a complete installation, all the downloaded cab files are deleted by the client. If I want to reinstall FSX for any reason, I have to redownload over 11 GB of files again before I can prompt the client to initiate the installation. This is inconvenient for me; I would like to make a backup of the cab-files and start an installation without the client.

As far as piracy protection: There is a key that is sent with the purchase and which can be accessed inside the client for online product registration, so I don't think that this should be an issue.

I have several programs that are digital downloads this is the way a lot of manufactures are going now less cost.
My suggestion would be to contact the place you downloaded the file from and see if they might be able to help you. Any descent company should provide support for the products they sell.
I purchased a hard copy and have the install DVD,S.
It might be difficult for any one to help you unless they downloaded from the same place.
The biggest problem is each client does things a little differently. You may be at the mercy of the client.
The only other solution would be to buy a hard copy and see if you can get your money back from the client.\
Lots of luck on that one

    Thanks for everyone's advice.

I have found a way to resolve the problem with the FSX installation directory.
The client installed my FSX into the folder D:\Microsoft Games\FSX (there was no way to directly install the sim into D:\FSX), but I simply moved all files from the FSX folder into the parent folder (Microsoft Games) and renamed that folder into "Flight Simulator X". After having done some online research, I was concerned that relocating the FSX files would cause problems with registry and file address entries, but that was more of a problem for those who had tons of add-ons installed and wanted to move the FSX files to a different drive. However, according to other sources, relocating the files into a different directory within the same drive was not so problematic, especially when having a "naked" FSX. After installation, I moved the files even before starting the FSX for the first time, and so far it has been working well without any issues.

The reinstallation/backup question is still not resolved, but it's not too big of a deal right now with having the FSX running OK. However, feel free to disclose any useful information. I have backed up the cab-files - just in case.
