Thread: Kids........... what would they do if they owned a real one

Default Kids........... what would they do if they owned a real one

In reference to the post titled: "The Patch for the Archer". Try owning a real plane for size......... and get hit with the normal barage of AD's. (airworthiness directives). It's usually costly & time consuming. And more than not, not covered by warrenty! Even the brand new Pipers & Cessna's get hit with these. Everything from exaust pipes & bad rivets, to faulty crankshafts or wrist pins. My own Lycoming is getting a complete cylinder removal for a wrist pin check!

When I see a post such as "The Patch for the Archer", as if it's life & death, I'm just "floored" considering it can still be "flown" anyway!!

In one piece......... but not for long! 0360-A1A

    Hmmmmmm....overhaul of an IO-360?

    Oooooh.....about $20,000???? ;-)

We paid $14,000 on our O-540, in 1985.

That would be 0-360. Archers are not fuel injected.

Not to mention brand new planes that have more problems than they're worth. One of the planes at my local FBO, a 2001 C172SP, was down more often in its first year than any other plane in the fleet. It still doesn't work correctly in some respects. Sure, most of the work is under warranty, some isn't. That plane would just sit there in the hangar for weeks not generating any revenue. Patience in all things aviation is something you either have already or learn to have. Otherwise, you won't be around aviation all that long.

Gee, you make a typo, and there's always some "expert" thinking that they can educate you on the obvious!

    :-lol

The fact is, there IS an IO-360 in the aircraft that I fly, a Mooney M20E, and that was what was on my mind.

Mea culpa I made a typo after working a 14 hour day trying to get the Archer update out!

What did you pay for the overhaul on YOUR O-360? Or do you have an O-540-B4B5 in your ship, as I used to have in my -235.

    Sorry 'bout that.

VREF on an IO-360-A1A is $17k for overhaul, $22,5k on factory reman.

0-360 should be a few thousand less.

Be easy on me, I bought your Archer package and have found it to be the most satifying plane in my sim. No major problems noticed.

    BTW... very cool plane.
The shortbodied E is a favorite! Our club has a 201, nothing but pleasure in the air, but those gear donuts fight me every time on the ground... 80kts over the fence is still probably too much.

    Typical flight school:

    The plane isn't "back"

    The plane is "broke"

    The instructor doesn't show

    The weather "sucks"

I remember spending "weeks" of planning & working up the adrenaline rush for my 3rd & longest cross country flight for my PPL. Arriving at the schools hangar, I found the planes cowling off & the engine half torn apart. But that wasn't the worse of it! I was also informed that the school had just went out of business!

Ouch... that's not fun. When I did my discovery flight over at Ogden back in March we spent about 7 minutes of the 30 idling on the run-up pad waiting for traffic to clear... just another of the joys of flying ;-)

    See ya in the pattern!
