  1. Thanks all for suggestions! In another thread on this matter it mentions a step I've been missing: FS9NoCD is a folder containing several files. At first, I merely installed FS9NoCD as a folder, but left it unaffected. However, it contains a new FS9.exe which needs to replace the original FS9.exe. I did so and, voila!, FS9 is back on my laptop! There were minor compatibility issues already handled automatically. And, of course, I must update various aircraft and scenery files beyond the default ones. Thanks again to flightsim.com users. Now I can keep my iMac in its Apple mode and do my FS9/GMax on the Dell. --d
  2. Thanks, jfg, Agreed, I believe I did restart with each installation. Agreed, avoided using Program Files. Agreed, my account seems to have full access (remember, it worked fine until one day (maybe because of an automatic Update?). I know nothing about (and fear) disabling DEP. The pesky part is everything working fine until one pivotal day. The odd part is already being the Administrator yet having it demand getting Administrator status. Perhaps I'll try another runthrough (or just revert to my iMac swapping back and forth between Apple and MS). Again, thanks for your thoughts. -- d
  3. Hello, I'm still contending with reinstalling FS9 on my Inspiron laptop (it had worked fine then one day ceased to open). I followed the instructions listed here (fs9.1 update/fs9.1 NoCD/4Gb) but get a pesky error message about needing Administrator status. Ha! I am the Administrator. Has anyone contended with this problem? (My current workaround is a complex one: My iMac 27 is partitioned Apple (where I do my website, Internet, etc) and MS (where I have FS9 and GMax). I'd much rather keep the iMac in Apple mode and do my FS9/Gmax on this laptop...) Many thanks in solving this faux Administrator problem.--EngEd (Dennis)
  4. I had both FS9 and GMax running just fine on my (now year-old) Dell, which does automatic updates of its (I believe) Windows 11 (more's the pity). Anyway, I managed to screw things up a week ago and needed to reinstall both FS9 and GMax. The latter worked fine, including its link to FS9 (as checked on another machine), but the FS9 refuses to start once its (lengthy 4-disc) reload is done. I believe I have the no-CD crank where it used to be. I get garbage messages such as "Needs Administrator" when indeed I am the administrator. Also an ERROR 34 or some such when I try to load the 9.1update. I read about a Microsoft update (dated 10/10 as I recall) that's causing havoc among some folks. (And, of course, my Dell is configured to do automatic MS updates....). My current workaround is to do GMax on the Dell, then take the .mdl over to fs9 operating on my other system in another room. I guess the exercise does me good, but it would sure be nice to get fs9 running on the Dell again. Any thoughts? Thanks. Dennis (aka EngEd)
  5. Aha. I stumbled on something of a fix for some: It seems keyed animations tend to fail (l_aileron_key, etc). However, non-keyed counterparts (l_aileron, for instance) work. It may take some axis fooling to get them right.
  6. Hello, All, It's me, enged again. The Dell laptop installation of Gmax and FS9 seems to work "almost" flawlessly. BUT for the oddest failure: Some (but only some) animations don't work. For example, gear does. Control stick, rudder pedals and pilot motions work, BUT not interior throttle or pilot control of it. (The "real throttle" works fine.) Control surfaces (ailerons, flaps, elevator, rudder) do not work. But things like canopy and hatches do. Note: I know the sensitivity of names-- things like l_aileron_key, etc. This is not the problem. The only GMax exporting oddity occurs when a warning that MSXML4.DLL is not functioning arises. I note that the file (about 1 K) is among those in FS9. I read some things about this file on the Internet, but have no idea whether its presence or malfunction would screw up some but not all GMax animations. I've also considered whether this Dell has sufficient hardware for this. But again, why would it handle some animations but not others? (All this arose when my iMac27 Windows XP partition went belly up (as reported here in this forum awhile back in "Old Timer Quandary"). I'm pleased to have got this far in recreating my FS9 and GMax on the Dell, but it would be fun to have full functionality again. Thanks for any thoughts on this animation oddity.-- Dennis
  7. This entry may well bring my quandary to resolution, in many aspects thanks to helpful people at this website. In particular, I believe the shudders are my own carelessness in aircraft.cfg files. I identified three shudderers among my scads of GMax designs, several of which I’ve described at http://www.SimanaitisSays.com (excuse the plug). Anyway, I cribbed successful .cfgs, suitably modified in naming only, and the shudders are gone. I still have specific updating of .cfgs, but I’m going to do this more carefully. In total, more or less, my crashed Windows XP GMax/FS9 seems to be up and functioning on my Windows 11 Dell laptop. One of these days I may spring for a big-screen PC. Thanks again for help and participation—ds
  8. Just to bring matters up to date, again through our excellent network of simmers I’ve solved several hassles, among them a GMax rendering as big as a house. Inexplicably, the Unit Preference got set to “inches.” God knows how. Set back to meters, all is well. Still haven’t solved the shudder. With some planes, it happens with at zero speed and static scenery. Same setting with most others is fine. I suspect some mildly corrupted .cfg file but haven’t identified it yet. By the way, for a variety of reasons I’m staying with FS9 and GMax. I have such a nice backlog. Also, I’m amused that the latest FS2020 had a Spruce Goose. I know it’ll be more artfully rendered than mine. But I’ve been enjoying Howie at the controls for years with mine.
  9. And, to report another success story (thanks to this website’s help), I was able to reinstall the Waitiko aircraft carrier and associated software for full-sound arrest landings. Zowie!
  10. Another quandary: Several planes appear on my Dell with a case of the shudders, some noteable only at high airspeed. (A memory shortcoming? Video card?) Thanks for any input. (The folks on this Forum are Super!)
  11. BB89, many thanks!! I had seen this crack but also wanted confirmation of its being legit. Bless your heart; you provided that. Hurrah!!
  12. Started to add planes and scenery. Planes are easy, though several of them shudder at high speed. I must relearn scenery add routine. I stumbled through Brooklands but not systematically enough to add berlin airlift. And I’m not doing scenery.cfg right. Next challenge: Get past the GMax registration Oddity: I have working GMax on my working iMac 27 Windows partition (the one with soundless Fltsim...). But when I copy/paste it to another PC it doesn’t copy the registration code. Geez. Any thoughts? Neither Autodesk nor defunct TurboSquid seem any good. And I don’t know how to deconstruct the working version. All in good fun.
  13. Hello, Peter, My Dell Inspiron 16 2-in-1 has Windows 11 Home. Version 10.0.22621, whatever that implies. I bought it this past May, as I recall. Yes. It seems to be running FS9 just fine, thanks. I have yet to install planes and scenery saved from corrupted computer.
  14. Hi, Guys!! Success with FS9 and new Dell!! Many thanks!! Even the Logitech stick worked plug&play with easy setup in the sim. I still have the GMax registration challenge. The AutoDesk (marketing-driven) approach is for someone with more patience than me. There’s another that looks a bit piratey. Daughter Suz suggests we look at the files for my GMax that works and seek a tiny file being the key. Also, (remember I’m an old timer), I’ve just learned about Blender. Free and apparently easy. What about its link to FS? I’ve seen (but not studied) stuff linking FS2020 and Blender. I wonder about Blender and earlier FS versions? At any rate, I now have a way of GMax-building on one computer and checking/flying on another. Better than when the XP system went belly up. Thanks again for your help. — d
  15. Hi, Tom, Hi, John, I have yet to apply the crack to the downloaded sim on the Dell. I'll let you know how it works. Alas, the old computer's PC partition is kaput, though I can access its files (though of course not run them) through the Apple side. All in good time-gobbling fun. -- d
