  1. The only performance issues have been traceable to my internet provider (or the Microsoft servers.) Even then, MSFS seems to continue to run smoothly except for a popup letting me know that I'm now in offline mode. These interruptions rarely exceed a few minutes, so they don't really even affect the live weather.
  2. I took the same approach when it was decompressing files for the DC3. After hours without movement, I decided to eat lunch before taking more drastic action. When I finished eating, it had moved on to decompressing the next file. I'll let it work at its own pace, but at this rate it should finish up sometime Saturday night or Sunday morning.
  3. I have been running MSFS on a laptop since shortly after its release, and I have had very few problems (that were not of my own making.) It probably helps that I run an essentially "clean" copy with no add-ons or third-party software, and I have very few other programs or apps on the laptop, pretty much just Microsoft's Office suite and a couple of browsers. FWIW, my laptop is a Dell Alienware m17 R3 Windows 11 Home 64-bit, x64-based processor Intel i9-10980HK CPU @ 2.40GHz (16 CPUs) 32GB RAM NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Super DirectX 12 1.5 TB disc space, >700 GB available after installing MSFS (and everything else on the computer) As you might expect, I spent about twice as much as I usually have for laptops in the past, more than $3000 a few years ago.
  4. After reporting problems for the first time with the previous update, I'm happy to report that this one was smooth sailing.
  5. Reset and reinstalled MSFS2020 from library/store and it seems to all be fine. I still need to select any custom settings I had, but there weren't many that really mattered. At least that process went smoothly.
  6. I hate to be a wet blanket, especially since this is the first time I have had a problem with an update, and even more especially because it's probably my fault. I launched the sim this morning and was taken to an update screen. It said it was downloading the update, but everything was zeroes: download speed, progress, etc. I waited for some time, probably not long enough, and paused the update download. Then I couldn't get it to restart. I closed the download/update window and that shut down the game entirely. When I tried again to launch the sim, from either the taskbar or my library in the Microsoft store, it takes me to a screen called "Gaming Services" in the Microsoft Store. I haven't figured out that I can do anything from that screen. Based on some information in the reviews of the Gaming Services app and an official Microsoft help site, I repaired Gaming Services, reset Gaming Services, and uninstalled and re-installed it, rebooting each time. It didn't help. Maybe someone here has a suggestion. I bought the premium edition in the Microsoft Store when it was first released and have routinely updated it each time without problems. Windows 11 home, 32GB RAM, Intel i9-10980HK running at 2.4GHz.NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Super
  7. I have not had a problem with it in the World Map. Be sure to designate the resulting custom location as "Departure" or "Arrival", or the sim will ignore it once you click "Fly."
  8. I had the same problem with my brand new Alienware computer about a year and a half ago. Buried deep within the Alienware Command Center is a setting for Audio Recon Profiles that was causing the annoying display. I turned it off and the problem went away.
  9. My understanding is that for at least the past few months Live Weather does collect and display data regarding snow cover on the ground. It's not a "seasonal" display across the board, and snow cover could be present in some locations year-round, but it is supposed to represent the actual snow cover at your location at that time.
  10. That's not a very specific statement, but after the latest update I could no longer use the arrows to move around in slew mode, I had to use the arrows on the NumPad (8,2,4,6), but they worked just fine. I have not yet gone into the settings to see what the update did to my key assignments, which have always been the default assignments.
  11. I just wanted to thank the brain trust on this forum. I had the same frustrating problem you all did this morning. I waited and counted on you all to find the solution and you did. I missed a day of flying, but otherwise all seems to be well. (Fingers crossed: I've launched the sim but haven't actually begun a flight.) Dave
  12. As a passenger, I flew in and out of Lukla in 1992 in real life. I can't remember now if it was in a Twin Otter or a Dash 7. The two things I remember: on landing, the stall alarm sounded for about half a minute before we touched down; and on take off we didn't have enough airspeed to lift off but just dropped into the valley until we picked up enough speed. Both of those things were routine and part of the plan. Dave
  13. I considered fulfilling my dream of flying in real life when I retired. Then I considered my history with cars and motorcycles, and decided my experience with flight simulator over the past 27 or so years was less painful. My 56 years of experience in mountain rescue, including picking up the pieces of numerous airplane and helicopter crashes, also played a part. Dave
  14. I went through much the same thought process about four months ago. I had a five-year-old laptop that didn't come close to meeting the minimum specs, and needed to be replaced anyway. For almost 40 years, I've been replacing computers avery 3-5 years to meet new requirements. I decided that I wanted to get the maximum out of the long overdue MSFS and that at my age (70) I might even be buying my last computer, so I got a Dell Alienware M17 R3 that met or exceeded all the optimum specs, but not quite as fancy as yours, for about $3300. I have been thrilled with it and MSFS 2020. I suspect it helps that I do most of my day-to-day stuff on a Macbook, so all I have on the Dell is MSFS and Microsoft 360; in other words, it has not been garbaged up with years of accumulated, useless junk. I only use the keyboard and mouse with no add-ons of equipment or scenery, so I haven't had any of the compatibility issues so many have complained of in this forum. There have been a few issues, like the short-lived CTD when opening the little map, that affected everyone, but I mostly have had no complaints, and when I am thinking something needs fixing, it often is fixed with the next one or two updates. As others have noted, though, I don't think anyone can predict how long I'll be able to go without needing to replace this laptop. I do know, though, that it won't be as quickly as if I got one that was less robust. Finally, I had good broadband before, but upgraded it when I got MSFS2020, although that was also due to the pandemic and streaming a lot more entertainment than I used to. Dave
  15. In the welcome screen, I enter the lat/lon location in decimal degrees in the search field on the left; then click the lat/lon displayed under it in DDMMSS for a custom location; then click on that location and set as departure. It will start you off about 1600' AGL. You may have to immediately go into slew mode (by pressing Y) to adjust your direction of travel or the altitude you want; toggle Y again to exit slew mode, and begin flying. Dave
