  1. While your GPU determines your maximum possible graphical fidelity, your CPU determines your maximum possible framerate. A simple way to determine if and where you have a bottle neck. Stutters generally equal GPU. FPS is a function of CPU. MSFS is largely a single core program. It isn't unusual that one core is close to 100% and the rest are close to idle. Don't quote me on this but if the program runs out of ram it begins using the HD as a back up which could be a problem especially if you have a spinning drive. Again generally the program will stay in 16 GB but if you like to tinker and have want to spend $150 or so of your stimulus money then you may or may not see any difference. Some claim that all the ram sticks should come from the same set. Failing that they should be the same make and model and speed. I added two additional same set sticks from G-Skills to make up 32 GB. Then the computer wouldn't post. Played around and discovered that there was a problem with one stick so I sent them back. When the replacements arrived they worked fine. My computer was new and so identical additions were no problem but may not be available for your older magic box.
  2. In 60 years I've never seen the ocean that calm. Even the inland waters in the Puget Sound always have some motion. The sea is a restless mistress. So is the air.
  3. This probably sounds stupid but what is your playing experience like vs what your computer numbers are? 30-35 fps is not unusual for this sim. If your equipment maintains that and with a good experience and only uses half the computer then you're a winner. Otherwise I also suspect something to do with settings but that's just a guess.
  4. Is there a difference between the download times for from MS vs Steam? I've read that the MS servers are slow but I doubt that Steam could be successful with slow service. I thought I could bump my speed up for a month just to get past the initial download but then we get into a contract issue. Starlink is not yet available but that will be interesting. Just a question?
  5. My understanding is that it's plug and play with no separate drivers to install. Could it be that you have a defective yoke? If you look at reviews across the board on all electronic equipment you will find that there is always an average of around about 10 with only 1 star or a 10 have a totally defective rate and about a third have something wrong and only get two or three stars. Newegg tonight that had a defective 8GB stick and G.Skill is top rated.
  6. support@xpgoodway.com There are two sites. One is just a download with no information except how to pay. Go the the full site which was just below when I googled and click on Contact Us in the right hand top corner. The FAQs will come up in French. Don't miss the box at the top that lets you switch to English. I didn't read all the FAQs. You can e-mail above if you don't find an answer. Lots of luck. Report back. Curious to know how you resolve this.
  7. You do in fact download a new unpainted but otherwise flyable airplane which you can then chose the color scheme of your choice. This one is fairly simple in that you are just moving folders and their contents and it doesn't involve editing any code. There are YouTube tutorials that will show you how to find your airplane folder and move files around. Basically you just find the X-Plane folder on the drive (Hard Drive) where you installed it. Will be your C: or D: Drive. Click on it to open and you will find folder inside named Airplanes. Windows 10 has it's own unzip. Just download the paint scheme, let windows unzip it and drag it to the Aircraft folder. Then find the unpainted version in the Aircraft folder, click to open then copy and paste the contents to the new version except a file named Act. Leave that part where it is. Close the file folders and open X-Plane and your newly painted plane should show up. There are also 'Winders' tutorials that will show you how to find and move files around. If it doesn't then my advice is always worth what you payed for it. HA HA. Good luck with the Beaver. One of the best of the best planes every built for it's intended purpose.
  8. These may or may not help. Get ahead of the plane by applying some right rudder before you release the brakes. Release the brake with the power in idle then run it up slowly and smoothly while concentrating on holding the right rudder on. Don't let it jump sideways like a scared horse. You won't need to touch the left rudder pedal. If it takes off to the right just lighten up a hair and let the torque pull you back to the center. Try centering the yoke/stick then take your hands off so you won't forget that you are steering with just your feet and grab it like a steering wheel. I only hit full power just before rotation then hold it level and fly out the rest of the runway to gain energy. A Cessna will take off in half the length of most paved runways. The controls are much more sensitive to tiny movements than a real plane or nobody would ever get their ppl. I crashed the first two times and took off by a hair on the third try. It just takes thinking through what's going on and practicing until you get it. Of course all flight controls are different. At the moment I'm using a joystick and Thrustmaster foot pedals which don't seem to have any adjustment. The joystick was the best thing available but now some yokes are coming back in stock. Will probably order a Honeywell Alpha yoke tomorrow but it still doesn't solve the rudder issue. In order to get a feel for the plane you might want to generate some flights already in the air which is more like a real flying lesson. You aren't expected to take off and land by yourself on the first fight but you do begin actually flying the plane once you are in the air along with the instructor right from the start. Hang in there you'll get it.
  9. I just want to thank you for one of the best presents ever. The Olympic Mountain Range is a little known wonder of the world. As a younger man I hiked mostly in the southern area of the Park and Nat. Forest and miss it dearly. I've been the the Elwa a couple of times since they opened the dam but just to the overlook parking lot. Thanks for the trip. Even though I didn't hike that area it still brings back wonderful memories.
  10. Many people recommend 32 GB ram. I've seen reviews where the program begins to run over 16 GB at high settings in high density areas. Some claim you should only use ram from the same kit others claim that in most cases adding another 16 GB kit works fine so long as it's the same make and model with the same latency settings. I added another set of the same Gskill ram to make 32 and it works for me. Otherwise it looks good. What is your controller hardware?
  11. That sounds like fun. We are looking for some snow later this week but I'm not that advanced having just finally begun due flying building and shipping delay. Surely there is a flight simmer in the Seattle area of all places capable of making a video in a snow storm.
  12. Need more info about you're computer. Dell has a rep of loosely applying the word gamer to their lower end models. Use the app and let us know whats inside the box. Also does the computer completely fail to start the game? Otherwise you could get into the settings and reduce the computing requirements. Can you load and start other games? My thoughts are that most any new computer should at least open the game if it downloaded correctly although you might end up with poor performance. Are you still in the return period?
  13. I decided to give X-Plane a try because MSFS doesn't seem stable enough and just buying, downloading and setting up are a monstrosity. I bought the X-Plane DVD and downloaded the continental US and CA in less than a half an hour. After that it took an hour or so to set up and I took my first "Flight School" flight. Which btw I didn't find very helpful. It's more difficult to fly than I'd expected and nothing like I remember in a real 172/152 but I'm actually flying and not waiting on hold for it to download. And I have the whole thing in the set of DVD's and don't have to wrestle with MS trying to fix things. I can do a fresh install very quickly if need be. I'll get back to MSFS in a year or so once it's more stable.
  14. For it's vaunted realistic flight characteristics I don't find that the X-Plane 172 flys anything like a real airplane. It's like driving and old car with bad steering. Inputs react slowly so you over react and set up wild oscillations. Would never have gotten my PPL if my trainer handled this way. Oh well I have nothing better to do and no animals were harmed by my wild antics. I learned how to fly and then to sail so I'll figure this out. However I would be totally lost if I didn't already have some idea what's going on. Progress not perfection.
