  1. Hi Oneleg, This can become a complicated subject, but here's a "simplistic" description. If the Airfield is "Controlled" i.e. ATC. Then it's generally up to the controllers to dictate which Arrival (STAR) and which Approach will be used. Variables such as Weather (most into wind RWY), Traffic (density and what direction are they all coming from) will further dictate which procedures ATC use. Yes, Pilots can "require" a particular Approach if they need to (maybe the into wind RWY is too short, or too much tail wind etc), but generally speaking, we will accept the Arrival and Approach assigned to us by ATC. Can you change your mind? You can to a certain degree. If you've been cleared for a particular approach, then ATC expect you to track a particular way (route) and at certain speeds. This is to separate you from other Aircraft. If there's a particular change you wish to make, such as cut a corner or change to visual approach, this needs to be requested and approved by ATC. It's not uncommon to have everyone on an Instrument Approach in good weather, for no other purpose than to have everyone spaced out a certain distance, and at expected speeds. If everyone was just "cleared visual approach" speed constraints can be waived and separation between aircraft could be reduced to unacceptable levels (from the point of view of ATC). If the airfield isn't controlled. Then it might be as simple as the Pilot making a decision as they get closer to the field. Good weather, lets do a Visual Approach. Bad weather (or maybe some traffic), it might be best to conduct an Instrument approach. In which case, our procedures dictate that we pick a "straight in" approach where possible. As opposed to an approach that requires us to fly over an Aid like a VOR or NDB. This saves time and fuel. However, the airport may have written procedures that dictate how Aircraft approach and depart the particular airfield. This may be due to the density of traffic, terrain, local noise abatement requirements etc. I hope this helps.

  3. How'd you go gullsrock? I've been hunting for someone who has stock for a while now and finally ordered one today.
  4. "Don't Sink" is an EGPWS (Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System) call-out. Specifically, "Mode 3". It measures any loss of barometric altitude vs Rad-Alt. If the loss is significant for a specific height, it'll let you know about it. It's a linear scale of Baro/Rad to get the waning. A loss of about 40' at 250RA would cause the "Don't Sink". It is a know bug in MSFS. It's rather annoying!
  5. Wouldn't such information come with MSFS? In other words, information to setup your hardware is no good 'till you get your hands on the software.
  6. For us in Australia; ATC will say something along the lines of “XXX, you’re BRG/DIST from a certain location, resume on navigation” or “resume own navigation, track DCT to XXX”. They will never just kick you out saying you’re on your own when on an IFR plan. They’ll send you to a point on your flight plan, and you pick it up from there. You don’t “restart” your plan, or just simply press GPS/NAV. The vectors they’ve sent you on may have bypassed several points on your plan...
  7. Those that are saying they "wont pay", I beg to differ. I'd suggest that once released, those same people will be fighting each-other to get it. A lot of money was/is spent on "addons" for flight simulators. The new MFS seems to incorporate a lot of these features "out of the box", so I'd have absolutely no problems paying more for it than I did for FSX, FS9 etc... As for subscriptions; same logic. If they update the Magnetic Variation, NAVAIDs etc, I'll pay for that, as I have in the past with 3rd Party products.
  8. Aren't the RWY identifiers dealt with in AFCAD? Only 3rd party developers add the RWY number into the texture.

  10. I made this jump when I built myself a new System last year. I've only loaded FSX a hand full of times. I'm finding myself flying on XPv11 almost exclusively (albeit, I have much to learn). I quite like it so far. But I made the decision that I'm not spending a cent on FSX or XP till MSFS comes out.
  11. I didn't know there were any off set ILS Approaches in FSX. Do you have many scenery addons installed? Some modify the NAVAID data within FSX and you can have these kind of results. There is an update (3rd Party created) that updates the FSX magnetic variation model.
