  1. Thanks for a very good post. I also still have FS9 and occasionally fly with it. I had so many add-ons plus my own "improved" panels, sounds flight dynamics so I didn't want to just discard it - lots of extra aircraft too. Its still good - OK the scenery is all generic but not bad and we are mostly busy flying So it flies on with my old gaming laptop while 2020 is on my purpose-bought desktop. Nice to be able to explore with 2020 though and I spent UK Coronavirus lockdown not being locked down - I investigated many places the world over. Fs 2020 does always seem to start under a cloud - even if only 3 Octas are up there! I have Track I/R so can look around/lean into instruments & controls but yes the panels were more easily read on 9. As with 9 I always set controls to maximum sensitivity, minimum deadband and most realistic. Paradoxically (my new favourite word) it makes all flying easier and I say its a must for helicopters. I only usually lean on stick and rudder rather than having to make big movements. You will find crucial differences: most of MSFS is out there - not on your PC including preferences and control settings. Graphics settings need trial and error of course but I find easier than with FS9. My rig was reccomended 2 years ago but is humble now. It will run all on ultra but I choose High (and turn off motion blur which seems a crazy thing). labels from POI etc can be turned off (assistance menu) as can all piloting assists (I leave co-pilot with ATC which is still terrible). Too many trees I reckon - still the "microsoft tree" present at many thresholds !! .(After a long struggle I made better scenery (for Portmoak Gliding field in Central Scotland - freeware here!) and I think I know why. I noticed it puts trees over what it thinks are trees (sometimes just bushes) but it also puts them over any shadows from trees. (It uses Bing maps - satellite view, not Google of course, so not quite as good. Then it guesses buildings with a decent (now) set of types to choose from and in other places: photogrammetry which is actual 3d sketchup like Google's 3d/streetview but again not so good. A great improvement is of course multiplayer/real world flights around us on several servers and, with Discord, speaking to ppl and having group flights or fly-ins. Oh and if you miss shift-Z see either here or flightsim.to and get "shift-Z stats", place in the community folder and enjoy. Happy flying (and if you get on Discord look for me (Gromit) (plus #1065 in the sim) . I have figured out most stuff and am always happy to help.
  2. I can save you the pain of a FS reinstall !! Like you all I have had issues from time to time and every time I have cured them - by fixing the X-Box app. It occasionally goes a bit crazy but usually we will start the PC and MSFS but the X-Box app updates during. Result: no loading. then we need Task manager - select MSFS - end process to get back from its froen state to the desktop again. So Prevention: before starting MSFS I go to Microsoft Store and load my library then ask for updates - catch one then and loading MSFS should go OK. And Cure: I find the easiest way to fix X-Box app is to uninstall it - reboot PC - go to Microsoft Store - select from available apps and install. It comes back with all our details and settings so no worries and is quicker than messing about with "repair". (To do that Windows Key - settings - apps select - uninstall (then as above). There may be some obscure combo of your rig vs a happening which means reinstall can't be avoided but so far I have never had to (after that first time 2 years ago before I found this out). Also remember that so much of this sim comes to us from "out there" rather than being on our machines (scenery of course but also preferences and controls) so if their servers have a glitch almost anything can happen to us (only last night - trim runaway and controls frozen after moving to full deflection (ouch!) Usually it all comes back online soon after. Hope this helps
  3. Also remember that controls are set and used via "the cloud" (ASOBO) and if anything goes wrong at their end we have things like stopping responding/ going hard over/ trim runaway etc. I have had this after that update (plus one CTD (very rare these days tho). I guess we just have to bear with them (Grizzlys perhaps!)
  4. Good point from Willilo - I have found that I need to check settings - sounds - advanced - and reset every so often and usually after a sim update and/or graphics one. seems to be especially if using Discord as well. Our rigs will be different of course but worth doing now and then.
  5. 29 downloads

It is a remake of the standard ASOBO guesstimate airfield created with the (still partly unfathomable) MSFS SDK
  6. That's very interesting and I have saved that method and will check it on my desktop MSFS machine. I had a weird update this time but I noticed that the X-Box app on win10 had just updated or even maybe wasn't finished. I wasn't expecting the update and noticed that the usual Microsoft Store bit had already happened. But then it wouldn't get past the piccy of that city and I tried my usual fix. Which is to fix the x-box app. These days I find it easier/quicker to delete it, restart, go to microsoft store, resinstall it: usually works. But it didn't on update day. however the same trick worked OK next day and all was well. (Any probs with the sim and I never suspect it - just the X-box app and 99.9% of the time its that). Sim is now running fine except weirdly any default ASOBO MFDs are inop. The flight instrument panels show no values, ditto the engine instruments and nav MFDs are just blank. This is despite proper startup and/or quick on runway startup. Oh well - steam guages for a while until a fix happens
  7. I totally agree Stehle. MSFS has to use X-box app to load many things and do multiplayer so its sort of 'comms unit' for the sim. The app can fail - usually after an update and either 'lose' our gamer ID or the bit that links things. So if MSFS won't load or fails - try X-box app. There are instructions how to repair that part of it but its far easier/quicker to do this: app manager-delete x-box-switch off-restart-microsoft store-reinstall x-box. Takes only a few minutes. I have had to do this 5 times since MSFS came out - first time after a sim reinstall which didn't help. By accident I discovered the app had 'lost me'.
  8. Its different ground images taken at different times stitched together. Visible in many 'out of the way' places. In more green & populated areas you can still see it less obviously and often its hidden by them changing hue of some areas (look for green tinted steets etc).
  9. Yes 99% of the time it IS the X-box app on Win10. Like many I started off reinstalling (not something we ever want to do often) and went through all kinds of hoops trying to get MSFS loading/updating. Then by chance I found the X-box app had 'forgotten' me. Some updates to it kill a process that is used to link MSFS to various necessary things. I have found its way easier and quicker to do this*** rather than find and patch up the duff bit - so: ***1 using App Manager - kill off X-Box App. 2 Restart PC. 3 Use Microsoft store to select and reinstall the app - job done. It always 'finds' my details automatically and then just works (until next update!!)
  10. I have a few 'external paid for' addons - Bleriot X1, Spitfire 9, and CriCri. They self-install into Community folder. But I also put a shortcut to it on my desktop. saves a lot of drilling into it when I want a peek or want to manually install stuff. freeware/donationware include Tiger Moth, Optica, P51 Mustang, Fokker D21 and the EC135 helicopter. I have noticed though that the current more unstable & stuttery version of the sim doesn't 'like' Community folder stuff as much as default. Varies from aircraft to aircraft but usually the frame rates and or stutters are worse.
  11. Yes I have noticed that too. I can very occasionally get one to carry on with a cruise at say 2000 ft AGL and if well trimmed out in a 172. But they not only usually throttle back and/or descend, they make a real hash of approaches. Having navigated a TBM to a major airport and obtained all ATIS & ATC clearences I thought copilot Oveur would take over from Captain Speaking and fly a decent pattern. At first - yes - but then a turn short of final to an undershoot on a taxiway (until I took over). Hmmm !
  12. It flies well - doesn't need legacy mode selected in the sim and looks great. Only problem was exaggerated prop gyroscopic effect as in raising tail during takeoff. I cured mine with a small cfg edit.
  13. Which is great - easy to get pushback with any aircraft anywhere. Also good for reversing back to the start of short runways. Also very useful with the Icon. If I nose it onto a beach without lowering landing gear I can then start up and 'back out' unti there is room to turn away. My other favourite alternative is refuel via the weight/balance popup menu at the top of screen - useful if no refuel station of if I can't find it.
  14. Yes - and even here in Scotland the world heritage Forth Bridge is missing completely. Well not completely - the 2d image is still there at the shores but it can be seen going underwater. Same for seaside piers and some boats in harbours. So that is the answer - both the missing bridges and the ones with black fill-in under them will need to be replaced with custom 3d bridges. I expect (hope) they will get round to doing that everywhere (but its a very big world)
  15. My old desktop has the sim with a great deal of addon scenery and especially aircraft - often with my improvements/rebuilds of cockpits, sounds etc. Also many programs to help make or manage these. It is from PC Specialist and the spec (which gives very fast frame rates). Easily upgradable. price? - Make me an offer (Tower and cables, disks only (can include an old PS2 mouse & Keyboard if needed) Bought new 08 2011 AMD Phenom 2 X4 955 3.2 Ghz/8mb cache Black Edition Asus M5A87 Motherboard USB 3 4Gb Kingston HyperX Genesis dual DDR3 RAM 1600mhz AMD Radeon HD 6770 1Gb 450Gb Velociraptor WD 4500HLHX 6Gb/sec 32Mb cache 10,000rpm 600 watt PS 24x dual layer DVD re-Writer Internal 52 in 1 card reader+ 1 USB2 port 6 USB2 rear and 2 USB front XP Home sp3. It was deliberately bought with XP rather than win 8 or 10 so I could use the sim without problems. Would have to be hand delivered/collected due to size/weight.
