  1. All of a sudden, I find that everything in my 2004 is locked in Read-Only mode. I go through the steps to "uncheck" and apply, but when I click on OK...it jumps back onto read-only. I can't seem to get it to turn the read-only mode off!!! Has anybody encountered this situation and solved it? This is really frustrating to say the least!! Could there be something outside FS9 controlling it??? JonB
  2. Many thanks for your response from the great "land down under", Dorian. I managed to get it working. Really don't care much for Win 11. Getting used to Win 10 was enough of a bother, and now this..thing! Do wish they would leave things alone when they work. Oh well, no sense grumbling!! Appreciate your help! Thanks again. JonB
  3. What's the trick to get FS9 to open and load in Windows 11? It runs fine on my desktop at home and did so on my traveling laptop too, both with Win 10, but I had to replace my old laptop and the new one has Windows 11. I'm in a hotel away from home trying to get FS9 to run. I installed it under a separate folder like most have learned to do, and managed to get the opening window to show but it just won't load. I remember we had to do something after installing FS9 on Win 10 to get it to function properly, but I can't remember what that was. Any advice ? I'm stuck! JonB
  4. Well hello there Mr. Zippy! Nice to hear from you again. Thanks for coming to my rescue once again!! I understand your responses and they put me a little more at ease with FSX-SE. I'm a bit confused by some of the differences between it and the older disk version. Am intrigued by your use of a "Hangar" folder to store unwanted aircraft. Where do you keep it and when you want to remove an aircraft do you move the entire acft file from the airplane folder to the Hangar folder or just the .cfg or one of the other files, just enough so that it doesn't show but can be easily restored? I seldom fly the default missions. I normally use FSX for IFR currency practice and sometimes make up my own "mission". So many of the defaults are just taking up spaced and memory. Another question if I may. With the disk version, I used to make backup copies of the entire Flight Simulator X folder...just in case. So do you backup your SE folder? If so, how? I will be adding some non-steam acft and scenery and don't want to lose them entirely if SE ever acts up like the old disk version did on occasion. JonB :) PS just found the DLC folder. What's that all about and what does DLC stand for, do you know?
  5. Need more help with FSX-SE. I’m still discovering just how different FSX-SE is from the orig. boxed edition. Turns out my learning curve is much steeper than I anticipated. I’m hoping that some of you more knowledgeable gents can help me out once more with a few more basic questions. After downloading FSX-SE I finally found it under C:STEAM> steamapps> common> FSX, not under C:Drive where the disk version is normally installed. Is that where it is supposed to be? I bought 2 FSX-SE acft add-ons from the Steam Store which installed them automatically. They show up when I open FSX-SE, but I can’t find their files. Don’t see them in SimObjects where the default acft. are located. What happens to Steam add-on files? Where does Steam install them? What about installing add-ons created for FSX disk version into FSX-SE? If they come with an installer, will it install them in the Steam version, or do you have to place them manually? If so…. Where do non-steam add-on aircraft go…into SimObejts> Aircraft , gauges, etc. ? Also, What about non-steam scenery add-ons. Where do they go? New Subject: I won’t be needing/using many of the default aircraft like the helicopters, sailplanes, aerobatics and others. Essentially, I don’t want/need all the aircraft FSX gives me. Is there an easy way to removing them from the Aircraft roster just so they won’t always have to see them when I go to pick an aircraft? JonB
  6. Thanks so much Tim. I think I have a pretty good handle on this Steam version now thanks to your help. :) One last thought just crossed my mind: can I (or how can I) have two SEs installed on my computer? One I would use just for the IFR practice....no addons. The other with addon acft, scenery etc....a sort of "play" version. Of course I wouldn't run both at the same time. Is such a thing possible? JonB
  7. Gentlemen: I can't thank you enough for your extraordinary and detailed responses. You cleared up nearly every concern I had about FSX Stream. Also I must beg your forgivnes for this delayed response. Seems my longtime membership had a glich and locked me out for several days, but Nels cleared it up for me \ Long story short...I went ahead & obtained FSX SE from Steam and downloaded it successfuly. It works fine: looks the same just as you said, but it sure is a different creature from the disk set! Aside from the setup process there must be many other differences to discover. So, if I may impose upon you; I have some new questions. 1. Steam buried it under C: Steam > steamapps > common> FSX. My question to you is..can it be safely relocated (moved) to C: FSXSE where my old old FSX and current FS9 are located? Or does the steam version have to remain buried? 2. Backups: How do you backup the FSX SE folder. Defintely leared my lesso about backing up "just in case". 3. Reinstalling: If you have to reinstall FSX SE, I understand you can download a virgin copy from Steam. But once it is 'reinstalled', can you then copy over it with your backup and have all your add-ons and changes back in play? Or do you have to add them again, one-at-a-time? 4. Add-ons: Is the procedure for adding aircraft to the SE version about the same as for the disk version; or is there some complex process? i.e. I mean are the add-on aircraft files installed elsewhere, or under SimObjedts>airplanes? (like you do with add-ons in FSX [disk]. 5. Can I remove some of the default aircraft which I wil never use? (I use FSX with an add-on GPS app from Mindstar Avn primarily to practice IFR approaches. I have to keep my IFR skills current for my job and it helps to practice the procedures siting a home. (uses less fuel, too) I still have FS9 for fun sim-flying! 6. Any other FSX SE pitfalls I will need to know? I would be most grateful for any help and/or advice you can think of. That's the kind of 'stuff' that makes this forum and this 'hobby/pastime/passion' so interesting. Otherwise I suspect many simmers would have given it up long ago and sought a more exciting pastime....bowling, perhaps? Thanks again! JonB :)
  8. Thanks for the reply, Tim. Trying to send you a PM. First time doing it, so I hope it comes through! JonB
  9. Seriously thinking of switch from FSX (disks) to the Steam Version. Some swear by it while others swear and hate it, so I’m not sure it would be a wise move. Is it even a Microsoft product? If anyone can help me with some questions I would be eternally grateful ‘cause, I’ve only heard a few things but I know absolutely nothing about ‘Steam’. Is it an online version of FSX (something like Office 365) or does it come on disks in a box? Does it work with Windows 10? I’ve heard that installation is quite complicated with lots of separate steps, unlike disks. Is that so? Is there an activation process? Can you install it on multiple computers? Does it match FSX? i.e. operation, speed, details, scenery density etc. What about add-ons like aircraft, scenery, buildings etc? What does…you have to have a “Steam Account” mean? Can you still get the FSX version today? Where can you find it and how do you buy it… through a store, online vendor, eBay? JonB

  11. Got it. Thanks!! PM reply is on its way. JonB
  12. Thanks Chris, I appreciate the info, especially about EZ-Scenery because, as luck would have it, I found an EZ-Scenery .exe file buried in one of my backup disks. I can't recall how I came by it. If I bought it from Abacus some years ago, I no longer have any registration/serial numbers or proof of purchase 'stuff' saved anywhere. Wondering if I'll need any of them to install and make use of the app. Haven't tried it yet. Am curious to know exactly what you meant about having to re-enter your registration info. Is it something Abacus gave you when you first bought the program? JonB
  13. Thanks for the responses, gents. Have heard that IS3 caught a virus and that's the reason it was discontinued. Don't know if that is true through. I saw some reference to a Instant Scenery 4 and a supposed connection toe Flt Sim 2020. Any truth to that? Does IS4 even exist? Also, Do you know if the EZ Scenery add-on can be found anywhere? I can't even find the Abacus website anymore. Is it gone, too? I had hoped to create more scenery in my old FS9, but the chances of that is looking pretty grim, now. A shame, too! Time changes everything, but in this case, not for the good!!!. JonB
  14. Wondering what is the status of the Instant Scenery add-on scenery now...September 2021? Are there any alternative scenery add-on available? Been away from Flt Sim for a couple of years and would like to continue some of my old FS9 scenery projects. Can anyone bring me up to date? Would appreciate it greatly. JonB
  15. My question is this: can you make up our own checkklists and/or reference sheets in FSX? (I mean the ones you call up with Shift +F10.) If not, is it possible to edit the existing wordy ones down to essential items, like flap settings, approach speeds, etc?. JonB
