  1. The announcement says March 26 was a "target release date". https://www.flightsimulator.com/ I don't see any announcement there that SU15 has actually been released. They usually have a news update each Thursday late in the day, so check the official web site later today for news...
  2. Apparently the windowed mode issue is a known problem. This was part of the most recent update announcement: Over the last several days, we’ve noticed many reports about an issue affecting PC players where the sim will always open in windowed mode even if full screen mode was set. Players using both the regular release build and the SU_15 beta build are affected by this issue. The team has identified the source of this bug, and a fix will be coming with SU_15. In the meantime, the workaround to restore full screen mode is to set this option in your General Settings each time you launch the sim or simply press Alt+Enter on your keyboard. https://www.flightsimulator.com/march-21st-2024-development-update/
  3. Anniversary of World's Worst Civil Aviation Accident By Frank's MS Flight Sim This is an updated version of my January 2023 video on the crash of two Boeing 747s (Pan Am and KLM) on the runway of the airport on the Island of Tenerife, Canary Islands, 27 March 1977. This update includes additional information on the crash from official sources, and a short interview with the surviving co-pilot from the Pan Am aircraft. With a death toll of 583, it remains the world's worst civil aviation accident. Hope you find it interesting. Cheers. Frank's MS Flight Sim https://www.youtube.com/@FranksMSFlightSimulator About Frank's MS Flight Sim New channel begun in 2021. Visit notable airfields and areas in Microsoft Flight Simulator (MSFS). Themes so far include: WW2; Bush/Mt./Water/Outback strips; “Golden Oldie” strips; heritage/vintage strips; and aircraft accident investigations. More different themes to come. Expect a new video roughly each week. Provides brief, interesting information, often with history, geography, maps, pictures etc, and great places to fly in MSFS. Focus is on interesting content rather than production values.
  4. Wow, people with ties to my local area. I learned to fly in real life at KOWD, and have landed real Cherokees there probably a thousand times! I've been to KDXR in real life and of course Mansfield many times. I often use KOWD as my "home" in flight sim these days, or 6B6 where I was also based many years.
  5. I've managed to pass all the training sessions with an "A" grade after a few tries, so it can be done. I ended up making a new joystick config just for Dune, since the controls are similar but not quite like those of a helicopter. Having that set right did help. The training sessions could use a bit more instruction than they actually provide but I did mostly figure it out. Still cannot land correctly repeatedly though. I think "going straight up a couple of hundred feet" is not what they are looking for...it seems that nap of the earth flying is more the norm here, so what they want is for you to get just off the ground and then moving forward, not up.
  6. MSFS Solo Around Australia, True Story, Part 2 By Frank's MS Flight Sim Come join Aussie Owen Zupp, airline pilot and award-winning aviation writer, as he flies solo in a light aircraft around Australia in 2010. Enjoy beautiful Australian scenery, especially the famous remote outback/backcountry, and learn a bit about about Aussie aviation history. Part 2 is Barkly through Darwin to Broome. Hope you enjoy. 7. Yes, plenty of basic hovering involved in this. To do the pickup you have to hover at the right altitude and within a specific radius for 5 seconds. I'm still a bit shaky at it, but got it done
  8. Took the Chinook out for another trip today, mostly to try out the external load feature. Delivered a boat from Southampton UK to an adjacent island... Now there's something you cannot do in most other aircraft
  9. Just an additional note: the mod to the Logitech spring includes the option of just removing part of the spring, and not all of it, thus removing the excessive tension but not all of it. The spring is just a heavy piece of coiled wire. If you have a Dremel tool with a cutting wheel you can remove parts of it until you get the tension that you want.
  10. I used to fly helicopters with the Logitech 3D Pro as well, and found the same problem with the spring. If you're a little bit handy, the spring can be removed. Do a Google search on spring mod or similar and you'll find both videos and text tutorials on how to do it. I did it and it's not that hard. Eventually though I decided to upgrade to a better stick. I got the VKB "Gladiator" which comes with several different springs. Or you can do what I ended up doing, and run it with no spring at all but since the friction on the stick is adjustable I've made stick movements sort of stiff so the stick does not flop around.
  11. Right, I figured it was probably me holding the controls wrong. Since helicopter controls don't center it's a bit of a challenge to find just the right spot when power is first applied!
  12. I'm enjoying it so far. One surprise is how fast it is! 150 knots vs about 115 for the JetRanger and about 90 for the Guimbal Cabri. It does fly differently, and being so stable it's actually easier for the most part though I'm still learning to fly it well...having trouble controlling level altitude and making good turns. I'm probably doing it wrong but it seems to want to take off much like a plane...apply power and it rolls forward a little and then lifts off still moving forward. Very different having wheels and being able to ground taxi. I still need to read the manual...I have another project going that's keeping me busy so my flying time has been short the past few days.
  13. Not having seen these Youtube DIY videos myself I cannot say what the builder's goal was. But real aircraft frequently have multiple radios so they were probably just trying to recreate a real aircraft panel. Depending on your simming goals you can probably get away with just one radio panel.
  14. Miltech Simulations just released the CH47D Chinook helicopter for MSFS, so I had to give it a try. I haven't read the manual yet so have not tried any of the interesting options like carrying loads, but did a couple of short flights just to try it out. Amazingly stable with handling noticeably different from other helicopters.
