  1. It doesn't matter why or when or what-on-earth do I do now but there are many occasions when I spend, (waste !) valuable minutes extracting myself from self-induced nightmares associated with either finger trouble or just plain ignorance. When I built the kit to match the spec of MSFS2020 I asked a local expert in such matters to help out. The dash of professionalism was worth it weight in gold. He was very well familiar with all sorts of Video games EXCEPT he wasn't a Flight Sim user. I retain his services for all my Windows stuff and enjoy our weekly chats, which leads me to ask what, precisely, do I look for in the Yellow pages, or similar, that will put me into contact with an independent agent who knows all about Flight Sims. Don't get me wrong, I think this site and others are very good and very helpful, but I'm a great believer in the personal touch. Is there a sort of list somewhere?
  2. The FX4 had a facilitating piece of s/w that enabled you to put which ever aircraft you were piloting into a position, heading, height or speed you wished. This was an ideal exercise in order to, a). Repeat operations because you wished to improve your skills, b). Try out different scenarios or c) Transport quickly between different geographical locations. There were several additional uses for this procedure and I found it extremely useful. Is there any similar function on MFS2020.? I think(!) I found the other FX4 function by accident. In other words it was not described in any manual or flight instruction, but I could be wrong. It was a long, long time ago.
  3. This just like me. As a covid lockdown project I remodelled the office, purchased top of the range Monitor, OS and control devices. ( at least as much as I could, everybody was at it it and most of the well reviewed items were sold out all over the place or had ridiculous prices ). I was pretty confident that I would soon be proficient as I had used the FS X version many years ago. BIG MISTAKE. MS2020 is NOTHING like anything you have experienced before. Start again with the FSX version and learn your trade. The Training is better, but the scenery is not so good. If you are learning how to fly, the only scenery you will be interested in is the hills! MS20 is breathtaking, especially on my Samsung curved 49" monitor. However it is better to be prepared for some longer distance viewing otherwise your head will swivel off. The next issue is probably the most serious at the start. Downloading. Even at my high spec and half decent down load speed, you are looking at 112 Gb and 6 hours to get it on the machine. IN addition, that is not all of it. You have further options to load up a whole load more, but be patient and leave everything else for the time you are confident with the system. The latest updates that you are offered AND more are offered every time you log on, take up a really long time to load which does destroy the need to just get it on and start flying. A third issue, at least for me, is the mysterious failure of a chosen situation or play to perform correctly. In the absence of a manual, (and this will be a MASSIVE excersise), the best advice I get from the experts on this forum, and it is the only one worth a light, is to reload the software. WHAT!!! Another 8 hours. But it works. My advice is to familiarise your basic skills with FSX, avoid the training and dive into a few simple demonstrations of individual flights. They are beyond compare. I believe that the management release of this application was rushed through for marketing reasons and the hope that we will all learn on the job. Now where have we all heard that before? But I am now another junior newbie, so I can only say how my experience has been and I'm in my mid-eighties!
  4. Third lesson, Take off. Did it ok and no problems but I wasn't't too steady so U thought I'd have another go. ! First issue..... The instrument panel is too dark. Anyway to brighten it up? I can pull the view down, but that gives me limited Visio on the runway. Second Issue......The instructor keeps bringing me back to the start line ion the runway because, either I am too far down the runway, or I have not enough speed. Third issue, I can get over 100knots on the airspeed indicator and , just as I think I am airborne, the instructor says I have not got enough speed and returns me to base! I believe my brakes are fully off and I have not enabled any flaps. My controller is the Thrustmaster Airbus edition. Thanks you Derek McBride
  5. I down loaded 112 Gb of programme from 'Steam" and calibrated my old Thrustmaster stick and the keyboard. Whilst I have flown the MS X FS, I thought refresher would be the sensible thing to do. This Sim is a monster and NOT similar to the X version. So I went for the Lesson one. There I was at 6400ft on 210 with Ms Morino telling me what wonderful scenery there was Around Red Lake city (or somewhere1) Then . Nothing. Apart from the odd repeated comment we just flew on and on. For ever. Nothing worked. I tried lesson two. Looking at the view from behind I could see the control surfaces moving in response to inputs and the throttle worked from the keyboard. I could release the brakes and see that the wheels where turning furiously, but the aircraft wouldn't move. I then downloaded the Japan Add-on. Everything worked, but I crashed because I had finger trouble with my keyboard. I tried one of the activity options and could get the aircraft moving OK. My computer was overheating so I the rehoused the bits in a bigger and better cooled Tower. I then reloaded the Steam version again and noted that the. programme was now 95Gb and assumed that that was normal update version. On starting the Sim I can get no further with training as ALL the Lessons, One to Eight are graded out. Are both these early problems related? What else do I need to do before reloading the Sim ? Set Up :-WIN10 64bit, AMD Ryzen 5 3600, 16Gb RAM, ASRock b450 K4, 8192Mb ATI Radeon RX450 , 983 SSD. Samsung C49 RG9 Screen
  6. OOPS Sorry. I will have to get back to you on that. I now have no PC. It was overheating so it's out for rebuild, but it was d/l on10th Oct and an update check was run on 16th Oct.
  7. Whilst I simmed quite happily with FSX years ago, I thought I'd upgrade my hardware and dive into MS FX2020. Dive is the correct word because of its size and complexity. Its a beast stacked with options and is absolutely nothing like the old MS Sim packages. So I thought I'd read up about it and downloaded a couple of so-called manuals but they were woefully short of the sort of detail I needed, especially the sort of detail that you need when you are in trouble. So, here I am. I have sorted my yoke, keyboard and pedals, fired up the first trainer section and am up in a Cessna at 6400 ft, heading at 210degrees in absolutely mind blowing scenery. (especially on a Samsung C49' curved screen.) But, after a couple of sentences about who my pilot is and where we are, I hear nothing else and I can do nothing else. We just fly on forever. The same issue acts out on the third lesson and I am stuck on the runway with the same pilot and a few of my flying controls work. I can toggle the view all over the place and I can see, on the runway view that my control surfaces move, and I can increase the throttle, but the brakes don't come off although I can see the wheels turning and going nowhere. I paid for a Japan Tour, but it comes up with a Bombadier Flying exercise and not a sort of lie back and enjoy it BUT my controls did work for the few seconds I was airborne. I was so surprised that I failed to control it properly with the keyboard and ended up in the Bay I can reload my old FS X. and all is working as it should. The 2020 version is an Express download and in desperate enquiries to all sorts of forums, without any real answers, I came across a brief reference to the Express version freezing and the suggestion was made that I delete the express version and download a new new one. There was another reference to the SSD being in a different PcI port. Whatever it said, I'm in trouble, so, as an old fashioned sailor I think I should hit it with a hammer and then reload unless anybody has the answer. I MUST be doing something stupid. Can anyone help?
  8. Well, that's short and sweet. And irrelevant. Thank you.
  9. It seemed as though most suppliers of FS hardware had supply problems about 6 weeks after lockdown and, as part of my new build cockpit assy, I wanted a HOTAS unit for test purposes. Apart from Thrustmaster at £150 + there was a scarcity of options, but EBay had a Chinese version which was a pure copy, design-wise of the TM product and it was only £40 !!. I thought, what can the worst thing that could happen? a). It would take 3 months to deliver. b). It would be cheap and nasty. c). It wouldn't work properly. d). The instructions would be unreadable. e). For forty quid, what's the worst thing. etc etc. Well, it arrived within the week. Looks and feels like the real thing from TM except its more glitzy. Does the job beautifully. HOWEVER, I was right about the instructions. Minimal and short on process. I thought someone on these forums would have the answers, but I can find no references in the search function. Two questions. A) Does anyone have a Full English set of instructions. The manufacturer's minimalist version doesn't cut it. B) After the joystick is calibrated and working, how do I next proceed to the throttle set up.? Surely, such a bargain must have been widely tested and used. Amazon now stock it and the review section tipped me off as to how to get the Joystick working, but ne news as yet about the throttle. Thank you all Derek McBride
  10. After 10 years out of the Flight Sim world I decided to wade right back in as my Grandson showed me the trailer about MS2020. So far I have specified the kit and got a local PC man to build it but I am bewildered by the software options that are advertised. I have WIN 7 on one OS and WIN 10 on another and ONLY because nasty- minded MS said it was going to end all dealings with WIN 7. The remains s/w in my garage is FS2004 and FSX Gold Ed.. FS2004 will not open on WIN7 or 10 and m yFZ-X is also XP OS. What FS. software will run on WIN 7 and what FS software will run on WIN 10 and is MS2020 available to run on WIN10 and, of so what exactly is its title? I can swap tp other FS makers if that is the advice you have for me. Thanks for listening.
