Reasons To Become a Pilot

Rate this Entry
Human beings have probably always looked to the sky and dreamed about traveling above the earth as the birds do. Incredibly, it has only been about 100 years since that dream has become a practical reality. Getting a license to fly a plane and become a pilot takes hard work and dedication, but the rewards can be very rich. If you've been thinking about becoming a pilot, here are some reasons to go ahead with it.

Convenient Travel
Would you like to travel to somewhere exotic where you can try different types of food and experience different cultures and activities? If you're a pilot and you own a plane, you can stroll right into the airport, bypass security, and take off in your plane. No layovers or baggage fees. You decide when to leave and travel at your own pace. When you arrive, you can land at any airport you want. You don't have to crowd into a cabin with a lot of strangers, but you can bring your family and friends along for the ride.

Multiple Options
Piloting aircraft can turn into a lucrative career if you want it too. Pilot jobs typically pay very well because of the demands of the job, but there are a lot of other perks as well, such as getting paid to travel the whole world. On the other hand, if you'd prefer to keep flying as just a hobby, that's fine too. Once you get your pilot's license, it's up to you what you want to do with it.

New Perspective
As a pilot, you get a view of the world that few people ever get to see. You'll gain a whole new appreciation and respect for the world on which you live and the many creatures that inhabit it, including human beings but not limited to them. At the same time, you'll also get a sense of the awesome power of the aircraft and what a privilege it is to be able to fly it.

Sense of Accomplishment
It's not easy to learn to fly a plane and get a pilot's license. Natural talent can only get you so far. When you finally do achieve your goal, you can take real pride in acquiring a skill that takes a lot of hard work to master. Then you can set new goals for yourself, such as landing on the numbers and perfecting the various maneuvers. The more you accomplish as a pilot, the bigger boost it can be for your self-esteem.

Better Brain
Flying requires you to master a lot of specialized skills. As you work toward your pilot's license, you may find that these have applications in your everyday life. Flying requires you to be able to perform mental math, manage resources, and be patient. It requires logical decision-making and planning. Even if flying isn't your day job, these skills can help you become better at it, whatever it may be.

New Friends
When you become a pilot, you'll meet a whole lot of people with whom you share interests. These people come from all walks of life and have diverse personalities, but they all have a love of flying. If you generally have a hard time making friends, this gives you a conversational "in" that can help you make new friends among your fellow pilots. Eventually, you may discover that flying makes you part of one big, crazy, loving family.

Stunning Views
Intellectually, you probably know that the view of the earth and sky from thousands of feet in the air is impressive. However, words can never convey how truly spectacular it can be. When you're a pilot, you can experience it whenever you want.

Not everyone is cut out to be a pilot, and getting your license takes a lot of hard work. However, people who have already become pilots agree that the benefits outweigh the drawbacks, and it is one of the coolest things they have ever done.
