    A review of the Flysimware Cessna 414 for Microsoft Flight Simulator by a professional pilot. I have not flown a Cessna 414 in the real world, but I started my career flying other Cessna 400 series aircraft and based my review on that experience.

    An overview of the aircraft is given along with a brief description of the avionics, cabin, lighting, pressurization system, and much more.

    The Jeppesen approach plate in the video is courtesy of Navigraph. Navigraph is a great addition to any flight simulator.

      Why does everything have to be video this day and age? Can't we just have good old fashioned readable reviews?

      Neat. Nicely done, as usual. You make me want that 414, but since I don't have a computer that can handle the 2020 version of the sim, I obviously don't have that version. But (take note Red) I really appreciate the video that shows the various features you mention, shows them operating, and gives an excellent idea of what your experience was like.

      While I don't have 400 series experience, I do have 310 experience, as well as other light twins, and I was pleasantly surprised at how well it seemed to operate, and how it appeared to fly. One thing I miss, though, is a description of handling qualities (often meaningless in a sim, but...) and whether things such as rate of turn for control deflection, control balance (especially aileron/rudder), and other such things that I'd hope to find in a real aircraft review.

      So thanks for a job well done, and for the video that told me so much more than words alone can say, even from such as Ernie Gann.

      You don't have 400 series experience and I have no Cessna 310 experience. I went from 50 hours in a Piper Apache to a Cessna 404 and then a 421. What a difference in power and performance that was! It is hard to equate handling from the real airplane to the airplane in the simulator. It's been nearly 20 years since my last flight in a 421. Funny you speak of Ernie Gann. I finally picked up Fate is the Hunter and started reading it again. That's something that has been on my to-do list for ages. Everyone says it is a great book. After reading it I'll probably be able to tell others it IS a great book. It's very good so far.

      I spoke of Gann because he has done probably the best of anyone I've read (Richard Bach second perhaps) of putting into words what it's like up there, painting many superb word pictures, and nowhere did he do that more effectively than in Fate Is The Hunter -- you can actually feel the sadness increase as the book goes on.

      Yes, from an Apache to a 404 is a giant difference, in fact Apache to Aztec is a big difference, with the Aztec being all that the Apache should have been.

      It is hard to equate handling from the real airplane to the airplane in the simulator.
      That's true, and it's especially hard to put it in words, but in FSX and in P3D there are certain ones that actually almost make you feel like it's the real thing, such as the Carenado V-35 after a friend improved the flight model -- I could almost feel the silky smoothness that I associate with Bonanzas.

      I spent some time riding shotgun in a 414A with modified engines back in the '00s and wow what a beautiful flier (as a non-multi rated PPL, I was only the pilot observer and assistant on nav/comms). They are great aircraft but not very practical from a financial ownership perspective. The remaining 4-series in general are very expensive to maintain for what you get out of them these days. That said, there's no other sound than running up those twin Continentals! The one I flew in had the RAM Series VII conversion good for 335hp/side (up from 310 in stock form). The owner opted out of the optional winglets as seen here in that package for whatever reason which made no sense to us as it was only about $25k if I remember correctly. Maybe he didn't trust messing with the wing. In any event, that thing would seriously get up and go. I am all in for this just to reflect on old times.

      It is amazing how an airplane in MSFS brings up stories of real life flying from the past. That is one thing I've come across quite a bit from having a YouTube channel dealing with aviation and MSFS. For that, I am thankful. $25,000 for winglets is a lot of money and they would never make the money back in fuel savings over the life of the airplane - just a guess. After first seeing the panel on the Flysimware 414, the airplane was a must have. The engine sound on takeoff is spot on and sounds exactly like the sounds I remember when flying 404 and 421s (even though that was 20 years ago) and those engines DO produce an amazing sound at takeoff power. There just aren't as many 400 series Cessnas flying around. Like you said, cost seems to be a big issue, and they are an aging fleet.
