    Flight Simulator 2020 First Impressions

    By Michael Hayward

It has been almost a year now since Microsoft revealed at E3 the next edition of Microsoft Flight Simulator. Since then, there has been numerous updates and features as to what the simulator will include and at X019 London last year, I even got a chance to sit down and try out the simulator for myself while interviewing the developers behind it, Asobo Studio.

Microsoft Flight Simulator - First Impressions

After an intensive Alpha and Beta process, last week Microsoft opened up the floor for the press to start trying out the simulator for themselves and showcase what the platform will have to offer. In this feature, we will take a look at a flight from London Luton to Inverness, starting from cold and dark before flying across the United Kingdom.

Overall, I am certainly impressed with what the simulator has to offer. The scenery is just fantastic, streaming satellite information from Bing Maps into the platform, while Azure AI takes care of smaller details such as buildings, forests, rivers and waterways. Flight dynamics too aren't bad. Certainly in need of some tweaking to get just right, but no longer the feeling of flying on rails.

It's certainly a privilege to be able to show off some gameplay for the all-new simulator, as I for one am very excited for its release. You have the whole world in your hands, the whole wide world to explore in such fascinating detail!

Over the next coming days and weeks before its launch on August 18th, I will be taking an in-depth look at the simulator, breaking down its many different aspects, from scenery to flight dynamics, and jetliners to general aviation aircraft.

Please let me know what your impressions are in the comments section below.

Brilliant review. I have been into flight simulation for 20 years starting with FS98 if u can believe it ! But I have been out of it since my FSX Steam started acting up on my computer last year so I am super pumped about this.
I have also been a huge follower of flightsim.com and I greatly appreciate all the effort u guys put into this great resource.
Thank You so much and keep it up !!!

New desktop, new joystick and yoke, VR addon along with budget will be my main concerns. Never ventured past FS9, so FS2020 is definitely on my list. Look forward to future articles here and reading on experiences from other simmers in the coming weeks.

After review on what I have purchased, where and when will Helicopters be added to the inventory?

Microsoft has said the helicopters are on the roadmap, but won't be available on day one.

I saw a video of fs2020 using a GTX 1070 card on yt and it did not look very good, so I too would like to know the spec's of the PC you are using.

My system spec is as follows:
      - Intel i7 6700
      - Nvidia GTX1660
      - 16GB RAM

Minimum specs-wise, Microsoft Flight Simulator does not require anything crazy modern or expensive. My settings are up on high, at some point in the week I'll go into detail about my setup and simulator settings.

Thanks for this review. Being into classic aeroplanes from the '30's to the '60's - none of the aircraft in the package appeal to me unfortunately. What 3rd party software is compatible - if at all?

Looked pretty darn good to me. What did you see that wasn't so good?

We won't know until Aug. 18th. And even then, the SDK might not be fully ready. You need to give the community a chance to dive in and develop things. MSFS is a brand new ball game.

My curiosity focuses around what the "normal" airports are going to look like, meaning the ones that are not specially built. I did briefly see St Barthelemy which I am familiar with (in the Caribbean) and it surprised me by how well it replicated reality. Not perfect by any means, but better than I expected. Did you see any of the "normal" airports?

I was noticing the textures quality and the frame rate is actually choppy if you watch close around the 17:00 mark when he is coming to land in a very sparsely rendered area. I would have thought in an area like that it would be silky smooth. It's beginning to look like it is more about cache space and bandwidth than any given machine spec's.

Outstanding video, as well as others in the series. Great narration, and lots to see and learn, solid production values, and beautiful destinations and scenery. The Helsinki trip in the DA62 was great, as was the Athens to Lemnos flight. Off to see more!

This indeed will be a whole new ball game, and I have purchased the Premium Delux edition since I like every aircraft it comes with. I am totally curious how they set things up accessibility wise since that was one of the things they have been working on.

At the time of recording that video, I hadn't realised my download speed was limited to 5mbps. At some point soon I'll be going into detail around my system specifications and in-sim settings, now that I have had a few days to play around.

Is there a reason the airplane Dutch rolled the whole trip from Luton to Inverness? Every barf bag on board must have gotten used (leaving none for the the AP's antics on final).

Noticed this on your LAS to SFO video on YT as well. A comenter there wondered if the developers left the yaw damper out of the NEO.

Thanks for the reply, that gives me great hope as my download speeds are in the 200's. I can't wait till it's released, there are a few conflicting reports around the web , on one of them the guy said if the download speed is less than 300 turn the graphics down to medium...I'm like Whaaaat? anyway we will all find out soon enough I guess. Even the default systems on the heavies look ok to a casual gamer like me compared to fsx.

When you switched views in the video, I thought I saw some streaks appear on the right side of the windshield as you switched to VC mode. What was that about and was that supposed to happen? I did notice the scenery at Inverness and I assume that is the default scenery and not an enhanced airport. Very good when compared to FSX or P3d. I did notice some taxiway lights out of position at Inverness, but that is really not a big deal. It is a great looking sim.
