Pretty much right where P3Dv3 users were left when v4 came out. I'm sure development will continue for both for a bit, but it will slowly start to phase out, and I am very sure it will all but die when the new MSFS comes out especially with the recent announcement that PMDG will be developing for it.

I think it will be similar to the old FSX to FSX:Steam and P3Dv1 to v2 to v3 path, where they were all pretty much compatible due to being 32-bit. It was only when P3Dv4 went 64-bit (with PBR and VR etc) when more serious updating of add-ons was required. If P3Dv5 stays 64-bit, then P3Dv4 add-ons should remain largely compatible.

As far as I can see the biggest change to P3Dv5 is a switch to DX12 which is just a more efficient way of using the CPU and GPU and shouldn't really affect compatibility. Anyway, I saw a comment by ORBX on the forums, stating: "we have been involved and are happy with the number that working as is without too much required in updates".

Seems we'll be ok to simply copy our existing v4 add-ons into v5 without issues. The only thing required by developers would be to update their installers to include the v5 path. Most seem happy to do it without charging extra "update fee", but of course there will always be the one or two money-sharks that will charge a fee and I will simply cut them out of my future purchasing decisions.
