    Microsoft Flight Simulator Developer Interview

    (Jorg Neumann & Sebastian Wloch)

    Conducted by Dominic Smith

A few days ago, I had the wonderful opportunity to speak to two members of the Microsoft Flight Simulator team, Jorg Neumann, Head of Microsoft Flight Simulator, and Sebastian Wloch, CEO, Co-Founder, Asobo Studio.

During our 40 minute interview, Jorg and Sebastian provided an incredible insight as to what we (the community) can expect to see in Microsoft's latest version of Flight Simulator.

    Microsoft Flight Simulator

Some of the areas touched upon were:

    • Lessons learned from previous versions, for example Microsoft Flight...
    • The freedom to fly to any part of the world...
    • Multiplayer usage...
    • Flight model improvements...
    • The new graphics engine...
    • The weather engine (this looks incredible)...
    • Regional ATC improvements...
    • Hardware requirements (always an important one)...
    • 3rd party content (payware and freeware), plus the tools required to make such content...
    • Streaming content and offline use...
    • Simulator updates...

    Microsoft Flight Simulator

At the end of the interview, and after seeing the incredibly realistic screen shots, I came away with a sense of excitement that I had not felt for quite some time. The passion and enthusiasm on offer from both Jorg and Sebastian was plain to see, and I for one can't wait until release day!

Many thanks to Jim Reilly for arranging this interview, and also to Cristian Delgado for his invaluable help.

A great interview with a lot of information, this really has raised to bar for ALL current simulators.
      World-wide VFR!!
      Dimmable cockpit lighting
      3D cockpits (no2D)

Far better aerodynanics & stall effects among others.

Also exciting is that we are told that the sim will be an ongoing product (similar to Windows 10), with ongoing updates.

      Now the wait begins..

It really does sound promising! You mentioned the aerodynamics and ongoing product scheme, which reminded me a lot of how X-Plane works. They've been looking at the competition.

Hi Jorg Neumann & Sebastian Wloch,

First of all I am extremely excited about the new Microsoft Flight Simulator, I have loved FlightSim since the 2002 release and would like to thank you very much for your efforts, time and all the work you have done in creating this beautiful new version.
I'm an amateur scenario developer and the big question we ask is what will future designers look like with the new Microsoft Flight Simulator?

Seeing such beautiful images, is it possible for amateur developers like me to customize my own scenarios like these?

In the interview you mentioned that will include the SDK, you can advance more information on scenario creation, many like me are counting the days to buy mine and be able to explore the possibilities of scenario development, could you tell us a little more about tools and techniques for scenario developers?

wish you much success with the New Microsoft Flight Simulator !!!
      thank you guys!

Great interview Dominic! Thank you all at Flightsim for giving us this window into the new product.

This product will be the most advanced increment ever announced due to the new live wx dynamic PBR rendering engine, the aerodynamics flight modeling, and earth/sky realism taking full advantage of modern multi-gpu video capabilities like other rendering engines.

Continued SDK support for developers is certainly key to ever expanding products so that is comforting to hear.

Really looking forward to all it has to offer.

Thanks again Flightsim and Dominic Smith for the interview. Great stuff!

Much appetizing! The sole question I have is about seasons. Read and heard other interviews and didn't get a neat answer: how seasons will be rendered in terms of how landscape will look? Yes, the weather is real-time or themed. But how will the date of the flight translate into the color of trees (fall, winter, spring, etc.), snow, freezing of water areas, etc ?

Again no reference to the way it will be marketed? Monthly subscription of course?

Excellent interview, the enthusiasm comes through as does the commitment to make this a truely leading simulator plus the desire to embrace the third-party community. Bring it on, can't wait!

This looks like an amazing product...I'm left wondering about flight controls hardware, medium on which it can be used, portability.

Then that is INDEED good news, if it is a one-off purchase.
