• Review: REX 5 - Environment Force

    Advanced Options

REX 5 - Environment Force advanced options

As well as the options inside of the program itself, we also have the advanced options which are available by clicking the beforementioned little REX icon whilst using the simulator. Clicking this brings up a fantastic mini-menu allowing easy customization and advanced tweaking of the visuals in the sim, again - without having to exit the simulator or use a second screen if you don't have one.

If you prefer to fine-tune things rather than use sliders, then this little interface is perfect. Of course, you can save all of the options in here the same way that you can in the main interface, and you can load them back in whenever you want should you decide to change things along the way.

One thing I do like about the mini-menu is the fact that it allows you to enter values in via the keyboard, which means you can be extremely precise and exact with your tweaking.

    Textures And Models

REX 5 - Environment Force - Texture Settings

One of the disadvantages (if you can call it that) I found was the requirement for you to own SkyForce 3D or REX Texture Direct for Environment Force to work properly. This is because Environment Force uses the models and textures from these other tools instead of coming packed with its own set of models and textures. Some people might see this as a disadvantage and they may need to go out and buy another product just to get Environment Force working.

Luckily for me - I already have both SkyForce 3D and Texture Direct, and by the looks of it, there is also going to be support for third-party tools as well. There is a greyed-out box which says "3rd-Party, Coming Soon".

The models and textures can also be customized in terms of resolution for the clouds. You can choose between 4096 x 4096 Textures, 2048 x 2048, 1024 x 1024 or 512 x 512. This is great for those of you who need to be able to customize this for the sake of performance.

    Conclusion And Final Verdict

So perhaps not the longest review of all time, but the simplicity and easy-to-use nature of this product speak for itself. There isn't really a need to go into much more detail, and I found the entire experience of using REX 5 - Environment Force extremely enjoyable and exciting. I was slightly disappointed with the inability to move or hide the tiny REX logo in the bottom-left hand corner of the screen, and it could have done with maybe a new interface instead of copying from previous products, but these are more aesthetic than anything else, and I'm happy to say I won't be taking too many points off my final verdict.

REX 5 - Environment Force is an absolutely fantastic and revolutionary piece of software which changes everything. No more do simmers have to close the sim if they want to change visuals, and no more do we have to spend hours finding the perfect combination.

I am happily giving the product a solid 8 out of 10, with the only gripes being the abovementioned issues relating to the advanced menu icon, the lack of a new interface, and the requirement to need another REX product in order to use Environment Force properly.
