    Introduction

REX Simulations are at it again with their well-known sim-changing tools and utilities - this time they've added even more customizability with their release of the new REX 5 - Environment Force.

With the ability to change sim shaders mid-flight, with no need to stop what you're doing to make changes, Environment Force really does add another level of flexibility to sim customization and put more power in the hands of flight simmers.

From water details to cloud models - all the options to create your perfect scenario are now at your fingertips, courtesy of the handy sliders and the advanced in-sim menu. Not only this, but Environment Force takes it one step further in providing you with a synchronized weather engine - injecting changes to the sim whenever they happen in the real world.

I've always been a huge fan of REX products, and I'm excited to have gotten my hands on this new piece of kit courtesy of FlightSim.Com.

    Interface / Ease of Use

    REX 5 - Environment Force

When I first opened Environment Force, I was expecting to see a different interface than the same old design of other REX products like SkyForce and Texture Direct, etc., however the interface still works great regardless, and that's the main thing.

The initial screen asks you if you'd like to work in Automation Mode, or in Manual Mode. Automation mode being where you can allow Environment Force to automatically control the environment visuals such as clouds and lighting, etc. or Manual mode being where you have the ability to manually tweak each and every one of the different settings to your liking.

I prefer to use Manual mode when using Environment Force - Active Sky does a great job of controlling the weather for me, so I prefer to leave that as is, but you can choose whichever option is best for your needs.

The sliders in the interface are extremely handy. If you're like me and have multiple monitors, you can drag Environment Force over to your second screen and adjust things in the sim without the main interface blocking your view, but the program also has an advanced tweaking menu which can be accessed by clicking the small REX logo in the bottom-left side of your screen when Environment Force is running.

A small gripe of mine is the small REX logo I mention above. It works great and it's a handy tool to have, however I couldn't find a way of hiding it when you don't need it, and this for me is a little annoying. Some people might not think much of it, but for me I had to knock a point off the final rating for that but trust me - that's just me being VERY critical in an attempt to provide the best review I can of the product which is otherwise absolutely fantastic.

    Customization Options

    REX 5 - Environment Force

I was very impressed with the range of different options Environment Force provides. Not only do you have the ability to control weather parameters and visibility, but you also have the ability to change water reflection and refraction, terrain coloring, cloud size, sky textures and a lot more too - it provides probably more customization than I have ever seen in any other product from REX or otherwise, and it allows you to do it in a very simple and basic way without the need to know all the technical stuff.

One factor I really like is that once you're done, you can share your preset with the community. I know this feature isn't "new" to the world, and other REX products allow this too, but the ability to import and export your presets and to modify others to your own liking within such a heavily featured product is just great.

Obviously sometimes we make mistakes, and you might not like the way a certain modification has made your clouds look. This isn't a problem - all of the options have a handy "reset" button next to them, and a "Global Reset" button on some too, making it easier than ever to switch back to default if you need to.
