    Freeware Focus: Ford Tri-Motor Project

    By Robin Meyerowitz

    Hullo, I'm Robin, & I'm an FS9'er!

    Ford Tri-Motor Project

That's me in the front seat of our MB326 Impala trainer simulator. Steve, the back seater, and myself built this for Cape Virtual, our virtual sim club, here in Cape Town, South Africa.

I've been simming since FS2000 and moved up the sims until I reached Prepar3D. Then I got bored and cynical. I found that I was chasing the Holy Grail to find what was thought of as being the best realistic sim/plane/add-on. When I was trying to decide as to which Boeing/Airbus's wings flexed better than the other, I pulled the plug, sat back and asked myself.. "Is this is what simming is all about?"

Then I realised that, for me, immersion is more important than realism. I saw this when pilots were flying our sims and bumped and braced themselves in the seat, anticipating a touch-down. Our sims are using FS2004 with freeware South African scenery, in a standard PC!

During some idle moments, I ended up searching the internet and somehow came across a site that really caught my eye. A few minutes later, I was completely captured and the excitement with flight simming started all over again.

I had found a remarkable site, hosting the late Garry J Smith's add-on, and gifted to the flight sim community by Edward C Moore.

Garry always said that simming is all about Fact, Fiction & Fun, so here we go...

This is a story that takes place during the 1930's, with the main star being the famous Ford Tri-Motor aircraft.

Interesting article. Far too many simmers are obsessed with things like wingflex, autoland, tweaking config files, etc. Freeing yourself from this and simply flying can improve immersion whatever sim you use. However I think that FS9 does represent a sweet spot in the development of the MSFS series so it’s a good sim to settle on if you don’t need the latest and greatest addons. And of course there is some excellent and well developed freeware to use with it.

I have almost all of Garry's scenery installed and love them. As a super fan to the Ford Garry really put the FUN back into simming for me.
