    FlightSim.Com Best Of 2018 Awards

2018 was an exciting year for flight simulation, with developers across the board, setting new standards on what was both possible and achievable. Airports, both large and small were recreated in stunning detail, and aircraft, those well known and those of a slightly more obscure nature, were brought to life for a wide variety of simulator platforms.

Choosing what constitutes the 'best of' is extremely difficult and subjective; the reason being, we all have our own idea of what is...best.

However, never to shy away from a task (and perhaps even controversy), the team at FlightSim.Com, would like to present a list of add-ons which we feel represent some of the best of 2018.

Purchase Just Flight - Stinson L5

    Best FSX/P3D GA Aircraft

    Just Flight - Stinson L-5

Nigel Porter wrote in his review:

"It is both fun to fly, and challenging to get right, and will give hours of enjoyment... I thoroughly recommend it!"

SkyForce 3D from REX certainly impressed Ray Andersen in his review:

"I rate the SkyForce3D for P3D v4+ with 4.80 out of 5 - this truly gave me an exceptional added flight simulation experience. Thank you REX Game Studios for creating this amazing addition for the flight simulation community - Keep up the excellent work!"

In his review, Michael Hayward was full of praise for the Just Flight HS-748:

      What about Freeware?
FS2004? There were some amazing releases for us. Please dont forget about us FS9'ers.

We thought about including freeware, but concluded that really should be done separately.

So, how about FS2004? There are not many new releases and more. Tell us what YOUR favorite was. As much as anything, I was hoping this would start a conversation...

I realise these are awards for add-on's introduced in 2018, but don't forget that some pre-2018 add-on's are even better.

MCE & RC4 spring to mind...

      My thinking....

      1. add a freeware category
      2. Have sort of a people's choice award, or should I say a Simmer's choice award, like flightsim comes up with the choices in the form of a poll?
      3. Why have just one winner? How can Flightsim just choose one when there are many that are so good, I would have three winners per category.

      Happy simming,

      Good thought, Clutch. I agree.

And Nels, I agree with you that freeware could be done as a separate category. In fact, one could set up the award categories using basically the same template, if you will, as the one in your article, even to include payware (were you ever to hook back up to a payware site.)

To zswobbie1's comment re FS9, I have to say, there ARE still crowds of them here--just look at number of posts about the still-beloved FS2004.

      Enjoyed your article, btw.

      Happy 2019,

We used to have a "peoples choice" award for freeware. We ran it every month for almost ten years. One of the biggest problems was low participation by voters...even though by voting you became eligible for a tangible prize from one of the sponsors. You can see the old results here:

Well, regular folks didn't have the time to download and try out all the various freeware items, only the retired have that kind of time. But HEY, I'm retired now.

The Monthly Awards were I felt very useful, as I did then download them and try most of the non military aircraft out. HD space was a issue for me back then and Scenery I had to be more selective, not the case today.

So bring back the MONTHLY Peoples Choice (freeware) Awards, please.

Why do freeware separately? In fact put it first, ahead of all these over priced pay wares. A lot of people are tired of over paying for the add-ons and would prefer to stick with freeware. The value just isn't there anymore for most of these add-ons.

I suspect the reason it's all payware is simply that's what putting $$$ in the pockets of those deciding, "but concluded that really should be done separately".

Your should read a very interesting article that well known scenery designer Bill Womack just published on The False Consensus Effect...

I'd be willing to do that. We've always tried to promote and encourage the freeware developers. It's the same reason we interview many of them and publish the interviews. Each week in our email newsletter we highlight a couple of freeware add-ons. When we were doing the monthly awards the winners each received a very nice wall plaque so they actually had something tangible to show for their work. We couldn't afford to do that now but I hope it shows how serious we've been in promoting freeware.

If we were to start again, how do you suggest we do it? The previous contest involved any member of FlightSim.Com placing a vote for their favorite freeware from the past month. The main problem we had was low participation, it was the same small handful of people who voted month after month. It got kind of silly in one way as the same people kept winning the prizes that the sponsors offered too. What finally killed it off, though, was cheating. I've never mentioned this before, but I discovered that someone -- no way to know who -- was creating accounts for the sole purpose of voting. This of course skewed the results so in many months they weren't really valid.

If you're interested in revising the monthly freeware awards, give me some ideas on how they would be done...

My feeling of a monthly award is too much, perhaps that's why it lost it's luster and lost participation. If it's to promote freeware development, maybe once a quarter. If it's to reward outstanding effort I think once a year (but multiple awards), would bring out the prestige of it a bit more. One could promote it with not only the awards but the nominations announcement. Per. haps followed by an interview/article of the project. This winner gets the award logo next to his avatar for that year. Really depends on how you want to build this up. Again, throwing out ideas.

      Best FSX Vintage
      Virtavia - Handley-Page Hampden v2 ??

No disrespect to Virtavia, but the Hampden was released in 2016 so why is appearing in a best of 2018 list?
And the JF 748 was released in 2017.

I agree with those who say freeware should be promoted, everything here is payware and the 'where can I buy' links all point back to the flightsim.com store.

Much agreement with many here ----- freeware promotion seems much more important, rather than the advertisement here.

Freeware developers HAVE to be supported... They are the backbone of our hobby. Some of them have become well known payware developers as well, based on our support.

Regretfully, for various reasons, we have lost some excelent freeware developers over the years. Garry Smith, Bill Lyons are only two of many.

I speak about FS2004 & freeware only.. It is very difficult having a monthly award, as there are not so many add-ons being released. We HAVE to spend more time & effort commenting about the downloads - there is a comment section for each & every download, & the developrs really appreciate our comments.

Maybe on a quarterly basis, we can have a vote on the best? Maybe an interview then? With the winners being entered into an annual award? I have sent my 'Best of FS2004 Freeware 2018' list to the mods for comment.

There are a lot of fun add-ons out there. We tend to look at the usual suspects - tube liners! But simming is more than that! Remember Bill Lyons's packages? Most included a plane, boat & maybe a car, with a story. Lionheart's Bugatti project & Garry's Ford Tri-Motor Project? There we have ramps, sloping & circular runways.

FS2004, even being 15 years old, has some unique features that newer sims do not have. We have boats, cars, submarines, fish & birds....

It is (like some of us) a mature product that works on almost any PC, and has to be celebrated.

Have a look at our library, & go back in time through the years.. You will find some forgotten gems there.

Let's celebrate those that have made our hobby so special for us!

One other issue. I know P3D is pretty new and obviously doesn't have a huge following yet. But I believe if more freeware were available for P3D that fact would certainly expand its' market reach.

People are more willing to buy payware when they have access to good freeware as well. And yes, a lot of software for FSX works with P3D. But a lot doesn't.

P3D is not 'pretty new.' it's almost a decade old; V1 was released in 2010. Also, I freeware has little, to nothing to do with growing its market.
