    Brief History

Born as a successor to the popular Fokker 27 "Friendship" turboprop, the Fokker 50 (F50) was Fokker's answer to dwindling sales numbers of the Friendship. It boasts several improvements in terms of efficiency in order to achieve up to a 30% reduction in fuel consumption over its predecessor. Its maiden flight took place on the 28th of December, 1985 and received certification from Dutch authorities in 1987.

Faced with stiff competition and several delays, the F50 never really became the success Fokker wanted. In March 1996, the production of the F50 ended, with only 213 airframes built and delivered to airlines such as Avianca, KLM and Lufthansa.

    Exterior Model

In FSX, the exterior model of the F50 lives up to the expectation one would have of Carenado. The usual bells and whistles, such as 4K texturing and dynamic propeller shine, are all included with this aircraft. The package comes with ten HD liveries and one blank livery for the more creative flight simmer to create additional liveries.

The included airlines are: Air Baltic, Alliance Airlines, Fly VLM, Virgin Australia, Insel Air, SAS and KLM Cityhopper. Also included are the liveries of the Taiwan Air Force, Republic of Singapore Air Force (an aircraft which I've personally had the pleasure to take a ride on) and a livery simply designated as "5Y-SMA".

From what I gather, it seems that the livery of 5Y-SMA is based on that of Skyward Express, an airline and air charter company based in Kenya. However, I could find no mention of the registration 5Y-SMA, though 5Y-SMS is indeed a real F50 with the company. Nonetheless, the name "Skyward Express" is not mentioned anywhere in the package.

Also of note is an error on the Republic of Singapore Air Force livery, which states "Singapore Air Force" instead of "Republic of Singapore Air Force", though I suppose this is somewhat intentional, perhaps due to licensing issues or otherwise.

    Carenado - Fokker F50

Surprisingly though, the exterior model is extremely frame rate friendly. Despite my system being one that's several years old, it still managed to perform excellently, delivering a smooth 60 FPS or more all the time. It should be noted though, I did not have add-on scenery installed whilst performing my tests, and the performance impact from other add-ons may impact your frame rate as well.

Thanks for the review. As you say the FMS is rather simplified and I find it struggles to cope with waypoint changes, often missing them. This may be because it flies offset from the magenta line, so might never get close enough the waypoint to change leg. There are a lot of small things wrong with the F50. I reported a long list of issues back in March but Carenado don't seem interested in supporting the product. The most annoying thing for me is the night lighting. On the main panel there is only floodlighting. If you turn that off you lose the instrument lighting too, very unrealistic. There is no dimming on the main panel either, yet the overhead panel has it.

On page 3 of the review you say you couldn't find a way to manually adjust the IAS for autopilot IAS hold mode. The IAS can be changed using the Pitch INC/DEC wheel on the AP control panel on the pedestal. The same control as is used to adjust VS in VS mode.

      Cheers,

      Kevin

It's a nice plane to fly and to look at. I don't notice any major FPS issues with all the extra eye candy but there are lite versions for those who are FPS conscious. Superb for those regional flights.

Could not take off with this aircraft in other words never came close to V1 even at full power.

Have to strongly agree. As with most add-ons this is overpriced. No value here. Price sells. Why not sell more for a reasonable price as opposed to a few way over priced.

Totally agree with the elevated price comments. I can afford it, but will no longer support it. Literally, hundreds of dollars of poorly designed FSX products residing on my computer. No more.

Try this again. FSX prices are getting too expensive.

Smokin I'm the same as you. I can afford all the add-ons my heart desires but no more of these over priced aircraft. I'm done getting bent over just to get another one. Hope these developers are listening...PRICE SELLS!

Thank you. It is a very nice Fokker 50 to fly. The very best Fokker 50 I have ever flown. The FMC is bad. But when you use Aivlasoft you can fly the flight plans reasonable with the FMC.

      Hello Meng Yu,
      Thanks for the nice review.
I have one question on behalf of the 'simple flying fspilots' among us: Is is possible to start the Fokker 50 with the default ctr + E ?
      Thanks for your reply!

      Hi,

Indeed it is possible to start the Fokker 50 with the CTR + E flightsim command.
