Aeroplane Heaven Previews Heinkel HE 111 P2

Here are a few renders of the Heinkel HE 111 P2 exterior, which is about to head for the paint shop. The entire seat unit, pedal mechanisms and control column can be raised as one unit so that the pilot sits higher with his head out of the top hatch. A small aeroscreen is raised to deflect the wind and protect the pilot from flying debris. This system was used to give the pilot better forward vision when taking off and landing and whenever the glass-house was obscured or damaged.

This is typical of the advanced nature of this design. The HE 111 was a remarkably capable piece of aeronautical design, beautifully crafted and finished with the very best of German precision, Crews must have been very proud of their machines.

The similarities of the shapes of the tailfeathers to those found in Spitfire wings is no coincidence. Mitchell is known to have visited the Heinkel factory before the war and discussed aerodynamics with them. He returned to England convinced that if Britain did not do something quickly to increase the levels of technology and advance the design of its military aeroplanes, the coming war could have disastrous consequences.

Does anyone know if the He 111's blind landing system is supported?
The original instruments (Lorenz) seem to be there, but do they work?
