The Antonov Design Bureau has certainly brought alive some of the most spectacular examples of aircraft, from the space shuttle ferries to the world's largest turboprop aircraft. The Antonov An-2 was neither of those things. It was a small biplane, unremarkable at first glance. Yet despite so, the An-2 has proven itself to be a reliable workhorse over the years, and in fact holds the record for the longest production run of any aircraft, at 45 years. The aircraft was so popular that it even attracted the attention of the Chinese. A clone, under the name Y-5, was also manufactured by the Harbin Aircraft Company, amounting to over 700 examples constructed. As for the Soviet version, over 18,000 of these aircraft were built, with 622 involved in hull-loss accidents, a number that might be surprising to some.

The aircraft remains in use by several operators worldwide and several thousand of these aircraft remain in service.

Despite the thousands of An-2s still in service, I still lack the pleasure to have witnessed one in person. Thankfully for others in similar predicaments as myself, Aerosoft and OctopusG has released an An-2 add-on for FSX, FSX Steam Edition, and P3D.

    Installation

The download and installation process for this An-2 was fairly straightforward, though the download is fairly sizable. After the download, the installation process is simple and all you require is your email address and serial key.

    Exterior

Upon installation of the add-on, the aircraft may be located under the publisher "OctopusG" or under manufacturer "Antonov". The default package comes with four liveries, three Russian and one Polish. Despite this aircraft having a massive production run, it does seem like the current selection of four liveries is all that the aircraft may possess. There is a paint kit bundled with the FS Pilot Shop download, although I have yet to see too many liveries of this aircraft around the web. Perhaps more will be uploaded as more users gain access to a paint kit (Find freeware repaints).

Nonetheless, despite the lack of liveries (there's only one flyable livery if you want to fly with an English cockpit), there are other appeals to the model. Various static elements can be seen on the plane when the appropriate button is pressed on the aircraft control panel. The propeller is also animated to follow the option of "hand-turning" it in order to transfer the oil from the cylinders to the oil sump for removal.

Perhaps the biggest selling point for the exterior is the amount of detail it manages to convey whilst still maintaining very good frame rates. Switching from the default Cessna 172 to this aircraft, there is almost no drop in the frame rates I experience. Individual rivets are modelled, and so are various static elements, including engine and pitot covers, so this aircraft manages to convey more detail without any significant loss in performance over default aircraft.

However, this performance does cost the user some of the aesthetic appeals other products may possess. For example, this aircraft doesn't possess reflections and shine like other aircraft, although perhaps the developers wished to simulate an old aircraft, in which case the lack of reflections will be more appropriate.
