From the opening scene in "Lost" to the movie "Passenger 57", the Lockheed L-1011 has seen its share of representation in popular culture. Yet, such representations don't nearly do enough justice as to how intricate an aircraft the L-1011 really is.

The L-1011 represents Lockheed's last ventures into the commercial aviation market, following iconic airliners such as the Constellation and L-188 Electra. Dubbed the "TriStar", it was arguably one of the most advanced airliners of its time, and the first to be certified for ILS Cat IIIc operations, allowing the TriStar fly in zero visibility conditions. Whilst taxiing in zero visibility may prove...interesting for the pilots, as an auto-taxiing system was curiously not installed in the TriStar, this certification does illustrate the technological marvels the engineers at Lockheed were able to accomplish.

Alas, for all the technological accomplishments, only 250 examples were constructed (compared to 446 DC-10s built). This was due in part to developmental issues surrounding the Rolls Royce RB-211 engines, with Rolls Royce almost going bankrupt during development. By the time Lockheed considered switching to a more basic General Electric engine, it was too late as the TriStar's airframe has already been configured to accept RB 211s. As a result, Lockheed lost many potential customers for the Tristar to the DC-10, and only eight planes remain operational today.

However, thanks to the wonders of flight simulation, we are able to experience flying this aircraft with this Captain Sim add-on. Even though it may be slightly dated, it remains as one of the few representations of the TriStar currently available and on first look, arguably the best looking.

    Installation

Having gotten the product from the FS Pilot Shop, installation was rather straightforward: download a zip file, unpack it and follow the installer's instructions. Owners of previous Captain Sim products will find this process highly familiar as the installer isn't all that different from that of other products, such as their 737 and 757.

If you're unable to connect to the internet using the system you're installing the L-1011 Captain on, Captain Sim has an offline activation feature here, though this process may be slightly troublesome as it would involve transferring a text file between two computers. Nonetheless, it's great that a solution is available to users should they encounter issues with their internet connection.

    Exterior

Upon installing the aircraft, it may be found under the manufacturer "Lockheed" or publisher "Captain Sim", with uniform thumbnails showing which livery they represent. Captain Sim has included eleven liveries, including two Air Canada ones. Airlines represented by these liveries include British Airways, Delta, All Nippon Airways and Cathay Pacific. Should your favorite airline not be represented in this selection, Captain Sim promises over 49 free liveries (found here), which are well hidden on Captain Sim's web site.

THIS IS A VERY WELL WRITTEN ARTICLE ON A FANTASTIC AIRCRAFT. I HAVE ONLY ABOUT A HUNDRED HOURS IN TYPE AND SOLD A TOTAL OF FOUR AIRCRAFT. TWO 500'S AND A 1A AND A DELTA 250 VERSION WHICH WAS A MODIFICATION DONE IN LATE EIGHTIES FOR DELTA. IN REAL LIFE THE OLDER AIRCRAFT BECAME AN AIR FRAME MAINTENANCE HOG AND COST INEFFECTIVE FOR THE AIRLINES. THE ENGINES HAD A WEIRD VIBRATION AND STARTUP HUM DISTINCTIVE TO THE AIRCRAFT. i FOUND THE AIRCRAFT IN FLIGHT SIM TO HANDLE VERY REALISTIC AND HAND FLYING WHICH REQUIRES FLYING THE NUMBERS TO BE VERY SIMPLE. ITS THE NUMBERS REALLY FOR ALL PLANES BUT WIDE BODY TYPES HAVE TO BE FOLLOWED SO AS TO INSURE A STABLE HANDS ON FLIGHT CONTROL PROCESS. IF YOU LOVE THESE OLD BIRDS , THIS IS A FANTASTIC PLANE FOR YOU SIM. HAPPY FLYING

An excellent and thorough review. It covers well all the good points and the few things that can be criticised. I certainly agree about the manuals. Why Captain Sim never include these in the installer is a complete mystery.

I’ve bought a few Captain Sim addons and the L-1011 is by far the best. It’s not a study sim but it is complex and everything simulated works well.
