The M20R Ovation is a light aircraft developed by Mooney in 1994. Being the 14th variant of the long-running Mooney M20 series, it was built to replace the M20M, M20L and M20K versions of the aircraft, with a total of 266 airframes being built.

Alabeo (a branch of Carenado who previously released a Mooney M20J back in 2008) released their version of the Mooney M20R for Microsoft Flight Simulator X and Prepar3D in the autumn of 2017 and in this review I will rate the aircraft on its visuals and how well it flies.

    Download And Install

Alabeo shares the same installation process with Carenado aircraft, making this simple to achieve.

When purchasing the aircraft from the FS PilotShop, you are provided with a ZIP file with two files contained within. One is the executable installer for the package and the other, an RTF installation document.

When clicking on the installer (Note: You MUST extract the installer, otherwise it will not work), you are prompted with a dialog box where you are asked to input your email and serial key; the latter provided by the PilotShop. An internet connection is required to confirm the serial key.

Once activated, you are asked which simulator the package is being installed into. Select your chosen platform and after a minute or so your newly purchased aircraft is ready to use.

    Exterior Model

Two models have been included with the aircraft, a full detail and a LITE version of the Ovation.

I personally have always loved the Mooney M20 series aircraft for its shape and elegance in the air, and the Alabeo Mooney does not disappoint! The modelling matches that of the iconic Mooney's shape, from the 'sports car' like cabin, to the vertical stabiliser that to some looks as if it were attached to the aircraft backwards. Five different liveries and a blank white version have been included with the add-on, all based on real aircraft. A texture pack has also been included meaning users can create their own liveries for the aircraft on top of the default selection.

Alabeo has worked on 4K resolution textures throughout the aircraft with high-quality bump mapping and weathering across the body, giving the aircraft a true-to-life feel. Smaller details have also been added to the model such as vents and engine intakes in the nose of the aircraft and different aerials and antenna on the roof and belly.

Two pilot models sit in the aircraft from the exterior view, although it is possible to hide the co-pilot if you prefer to only have one pilot within; a nice extra touch added by Alabeo.

The aircraft also features numerous animated flight surfaces, including the ailerons, rudder and flaps. Other exterior animations include the main door on the co-pilot seat & rear cargo hatch.

The only gripe I can have with the exterior view is actually with the camera itself, it feels a little too close to the aircraft and can lead to clipping, including in the FSX free flight menu. Other than that, the model itself is fantastic.
