    An Interview with Ray Taburet

    Ray, when did you start developing for flight simulators and what got you interested in it?

    My interest in aviation started as a child at the age of 6. My family moved to an urban complex right under the flight path of Linate airport. From then till basically I was a late teen, I had aircraft flying over my head. I remember them well, as each time one passed overhead, I just had to look up!

       

    I also remember taking bike trips around the airport perimeter. We were so close to the aircraft at times (perhaps just a stone throw away) and of course, the jet blasts from the engines throwing us back was the highlight of the trip; great fun!

    Could you tell us about the nature of your designs and what you do?

    Yes, of course. Most of my designs are terrain related and cover vast areas; such as vectors, mesh and photorealistic sceneries.

    What do you consider your best or most popular work to date?

    I think it would have to be the freeware FS2004 photorealistic scenery of Las Vegas! This was created many years ago and uploaded right here at FlightSim.Com: lasvegas.zip. My friend Ron Ezra created the entire autogen for this package by hand, which took him a whole year to do! For this one fact alone, it makes it my favorite (it looks great too).

    Ray, what do you find to be the most challenging aspect of a project?

    As I like to concentrate on base sceneries, the most challenging aspect of a project is finding datasets that have not been used before. Raising the mesh resolution in areas where we do not have high resolution terrain, is like landing on a new planet where nobody has been before.

    To date, what have been your favorite projects?

    Since beginning my work, I have had the privilege and also good fortune to work with a fair number of talented developers; both commercially and non-commercially. To date, Singapore Forever for Flight Simulator 2002 (a simulator I really loved) remains one of my favorites. These were good times!

       

    When it comes to development, what software packages and tools do you use to develop?

    In the past I made good use of Manifold GIS, but currently use QGIS (most of the time). Because of the types of sceneries I create, I do not do that much graphical work, but if I do need to use a graphics editor, then I use either an old version of Paint Shop, or Gimp.

    Ray, who would you consider to be your mentors or inspiration in the development world?

    I would say that my mentors where the Microsoft Aces Team (even though I had to digest their SDK instructions for several months). There are also certain members of the community (active on various forums) who have, and still do, provide an invaluable service to all who enter. These too are a great inspiration to me!

    Do you develop payware/freeware or both and why?

    At the moment I concentrate solely on payware. In the past and for many years, I did do freeware; freeware was my policy! Unfortunately, to do what I do, takes a great deal of time, and as such, I had to make that time count. As I really enjoyed what I was doing, I took the brave decision to leave my full time job and go part time. This allowed me to dedicate the rest of my time to creating simulator add-ons; which compensated me for the loss of income when I left my full time job.

      I have been using ray's scenery for many year and it was a pleasure to read this little interview. Starting with FS3, I did myself few sceneries running under FS4, thus I understand quite well, what a huge work it is. Thanks Ray for all your efforts.

      Great article, nice to get to know someone behind the scenery. One of my favourites years back was Ranger Creek, near Mount Rainier, Washington state.
