    History

The Piper Navajos were introduced in the late summer of 1966 and marked Piper's move into the world of "bigger" aircraft. When it was introduced, it was one of many new cabin class general aviation aircraft. Initially, it used normally aspirated and turbocharged versions of the Lycoming IO-540 series of engines, in a twin-engine configuration, aimed at the general aviation market. It still enjoys relatively high popularity, but due to a decrease in demand across the general aviation market in the 1980s, its production stopped in 1984.

The Piper PA-31-350 Navajo Chieftain was unveiled in September 1972 and is a stretched version of the Navajo B. Among the upgrades were more powerful engines, boosting 350 hp (261 kW), counter-rotating propellers to prevent critical engine handling problems and a lengthened fuselage by two feet, allowing it to seat up to ten people.

    Introduction

The PA-31 Chieftain was introduced with a dual purpose: corporate and commuter. The PA-31-350, or Chieftain for short, was the most popular version and outsold all other Navajo models. It is hailed by pilots as a very well behaved plane, being smooth and responding well to the controls. Compared to similar models, the critical speeds are relatively low (such as the minimum control speed in the landing configuration with one engine inoperative), giving the pilot a bit more margin to work with.

The PA-31 Chieftain that we will be looking into today was developed by Alabeo, an add-on developer which has products for all the main flight simulators today. Alabeo is fast becoming a force to be reckoned with, with many top quality aircraft offerings.

The current version of the Chieftain 1.1 (June 9th 2017) is compatible both with X-Plane 10 (latest update) and X-Plane 11. It features high quality 3D models with 4K textures, accurately reproduced flight characteristics, custom PA-31 sounds, and much much more.

    Installation

After purchasing the Alabeo PA-31 Chieftain, you are prompted to download a zip file of roughly 410 MB in size, which you need to unzip into X-Plane's aircraft directory.

When loading up the aircraft for the first time you will then need to enter your registration key, and proceed with the online activation process. You'll be happy to know that you only need to do this the first time you load up your aircraft.
