    Road Trip: FlightSimCon 2017

    By Nels Anderson

I've just returned from two full days of flightsim immersion at FlightSimCon 2017. If you weren't there, you missed out on a great weekend and I'll try to fill you in on some of what happened. But with some 35 exhibitors, one or two forums at all times, and nearly 800 people attending it was impossible to do it all!

This is the fifth year of this event, and it gets bigger and better every time. Previously, the convention was held at the New England Air Museum but had just become too big so this year it moved to the other side of Bradley International Airport in Connecticut and was hosted by the Sheraton Hotel at Bradley Airport. This was a great location and the facilities were perfect for the purpose.

These days it can be hard to watch the action at big airports. KBDL isn't all that big by international airport standards but it sure offers some great spotting opportunities. The hotel directly overlooks the gates and taxiway and has a clear view of the runways. There's even a hallway with benches to watch from. Some of the rooms the convention was in also overlooked the airport.

Arrival and registration was quick and efficient despite a record 780 attendees (up from 540 last year). Everyone was provided with a name badge which was a great help in meeting and recognizing people, as well as a bag with a program and some other materials.

    FlightSimCon 2017 Begins

Promptly at 9:00 am the FlightSimCon program began with a welcome from Evan Reiter, who is training administrator for Boston Virtual ARTCC but more imporantly one of the prime organizers of the event. He gave a brief introduction, described some logistics and discussed the Whova app that everyone could use to get the event schedule, see photos, leave messages, and more.

    Product Announcement Forum

Immediately after began the Product Announcement Forum, in which eight companies were given a brief five minutes to introduce their product. Included in the forum were:

    FlightSimCon 2017 - Infinite Flight     FlightSimCon 2017

    • FS-FlightControl
    • Infinite Flight
    • Mindstar Aviation
    • Pilot Edge
    • FSFX Packages
    • Laminar Research
    • FlyInside
    • HiFi Simulation

I'm sure most of these are familiar names. If not, visit the FlightSimCon web site and check them out.

Great report, Nels! I'm sorry I didn't make it this year; due, of all things, to a real world Cessna 172 that developed alternator problems shortly before we were to blast off into the blue, bound for KBDL. Oh well, if you have time to spare, as they say......

FlightSimCon is beginning to remind me of the development of another annual event, one that I have attended for over 30 years now. AirVenture started out like this, small but rapidly growing, and I think that, judging from your report and some online streams, it may be appropriate to start calling this the Virtual Oshkosh. One of your comments captured the similarity perfectly - when you sat down to eat with 4 strangers and became friends instantly. That's how it happens at the big O, and that's the best part of it all.

See you at FlightsimCon 2018! Perhaps I'll try the Skooter next year -- probably more reliable than any Cessna!

Thank you for the report, wish I could have been there. Is it always going to be in Conn.? Why not a more central location such as DFW or KMCI. The NRA conventions are nice as they rotate the venue annually so people from all areas have an opportunity to attend. Not everyone can take time off or afford the airfare to New England.

Hi Tony...I had heard you were coming on Sunday, really sorry to hear that aircraft problems prevented it!

You may be right, this is becoming the "virtual Airventure". It certainly has grown quickly in just a few years and there's nothing like being surrounding by like minded people.

Nels, I just got done listening to the panel discussion you moderated between the big 3. I got a chuckle when I heard you bring up my Commodore 64. We bring it to FlightSimCon each year and set it up next to my 172 to give people a sense of where the hobby got its start and where we've taken it.

I heard someone ask wat version of the sim it was running. It's SubLogic Flight Simulator II. As I understand it by version 3 MS had the rights to it and that is what began the oddessy that is presently FSX Steam, FSW and, P3D. We have sure come a long way!

Thanks for the honorable mention! Hope to see you at FlightSimCon next year. Please be sure to stop over and fly the sim. Either of them

The event was started by Boston Virtual ARTCC and the event planner is located in Connecticut too, so the current location is logical. Apparently though they are thinking of a different venue for next time. Unfortunately that would likely mean I could not go.

      Hi Tom...

Your Cessna has been a highlight of the shows for several years now. That's quite the family project. You're always so busy but I'd love to have a chance to fly it if there's an opening.

I love seeing the C64 actually operating. I can still remember when those were new, though I was an Apple II guy at the time.

      Nels,
Very nice write up and pics. Thanks for the personal touch. Got a minute...hour...day? Then you can go watch the FSCon videos. Here is a partial list of what came out so far. By this weekend you can probably watch video for 2 days or more. Just in time for Father's Day. (Yes, I am that guy 'in the forum' - ha).
